Executive In Residence

Current

I'm beyond delighted to be joining the Tech To The Rescue movement. As Executive In Residence, I'll be focusing very much on the new AI for Changemakers program, an exciting global accelerator program for AI innovators and leading nonprofit organizations tackling the world’s most pressing problems.I found this exciting, fast-growing organization through happenstance -- another LinkedIn connection turned me on to their work last fall. After following them lightly, I reached out and here I am, part of the team!Watch for more outreach from me asking past and present friends for support, ideas, and help. We're marshaling global resources to make big changes in target areas. With strong support from AWS and Google, this new AI for Changemakers campaign shows great promise!Jealous? You should be! I truly am having the time of my life ... and really hope to share this feeling with many of you!

Following its success with an Executive-In-Residence program focused on Capacity Building, The Forbes Funds established a program in spring 2016 to help non-profit executives improve how they prioritize and implement investments in technology. Technology-Executive-In-Residence (TEIR) assistance is open to all human service and community development organizations in Allegheny County, and there is no charge for the service.TEIR engagements are intended to provide high-level advisory support to non-profit executives as they evaluate technology investments, assess the effectiveness of current systems, and launch technology projects. The goal of the program is to aid leaders in deciding how to utilize technology effectively in support of their mission by offering strategic advice, providing relevant resources, and connecting with topical experts.Organizations can engage by starting with The Forbes Fund’s technology assessment, which can help identify opportunities for improvement in the current use of technology. Or, TEIR advisory services can be requested to aid with a particular initiative or challenge.Coaching is provided by Deb Stuligross, an experienced professional with over 30 years in IT and software leadership in business and non-profit organizations. To explore the TEIR program’s potential to aid your organization, please contact Hannah Karolak at hannah@forbesfunds.org

Building a new private Catholic high school that offers an affordable career and college prep education. Holy Family Academy's novel work study program enables students to contribute to their tuition by working one day each week at a prestigious area company, and HFA's curriculum incorporates substantial project-based and technology learning. I coordinate the work study program, seeing to it that each student has an opportunity to acquire valuable job experience and marketable skills, develop a network of business contacts, gain exposure to a wide range of career opportunities, refine a strong work ethic, and increase self-esteem... and ensuring that each employer gains value from our students' employment and fulfillment in enabling a young adult to grow and learn.

Systems Modeling

I was privileged to be part of a groundbreaking software start-up, growing from a couple of us in a single-room office to a real company. We had great leaps of learning from both successes and failures – and an incredible sense of purpose in being part of a team with common goals, shared struggles, and exciting successes to celebrate together. We grew in our understanding of how to build software that delights customers, as well as formulating a strategy to be a profitable business. As we grew from a few to 60 employees, I held various positions in development, product management, consulting, and leadership. I directed the creation of the Arena simulation product, which remains a market leader today, and was coauthor of the first edition of the award-winning Simulation with Arena textbook (McGraw-Hill).
