Product Engineer-In-Training Ii
Product Engineer-In-Training Ii
Technical leader of legacy manufacturing product; Transitioned arterial implant MEMS into manufacturing to supply clinical trials and beyond; Participated in design sprints for a wide variety of new products- Successfully transitioned project into manufacturing, securing $1M+ projected revenue for 2023 (91% increase from 2022)- Drove continuous improvement activities to identify and realise yield improvement, cost reduction, and cycle time reduction. Managed integrated change control for these improvements and closed 44 process changes in 2022 across four different projects.- Tracked production yield, analysed project financials, adjusted cost models to justify a required 13% year over year price increase.
Product Engineer-In-Training I
Primary technical liaison for assigned production customers; Transitioned subdermal glucose monitoring MEMS into pilot phase in preparation for clinical studies- Investigated a large volume RMA for root cause, and developed a test jig and methodology to quantitatively measure a previously unknown failure mode. Developed a rework that enabled recovery of 92% revenue on returned parts- Modernised legacy manufacturing project with a volume manufacturing outlook, implementing efficiencies and eliminating non-value added steps
R & D Engineer-In-Training
Developed and transitioned retinal implant MEMS into manufacturing to supply animal studies and human trials; Technical lead for Optical/Transducer MEMS platform- Developed and transferred to operations novel MEMS techniques to manufacture biocompatible 3D microneedle structures and protect them during assembly and shipment- Led a panel of in-house experts using root cause analysis to determine cause and mitigations for a major line-down issue. Prepared a design of experiment (DOE) using statistical modeling software to assess high-probability root causes while constraining number of experiments- Implemented good documentation practices and chemical traceability for medical products- Transitioned from a manual SEM measurement to a faster, more repeatable and reliable automated confocal microscope measurement, resulting in an 88% decrease in operator time- Critiqued MEMS design submissions by identifying problematic design elements to ensure design platform compatibility for reduced cost implementation of multiple chip designs on a single wafer
Graduate Student Research Assistant
For my thesis, I worked with Dr Y.Y. Tsui as part of his Optics & Photonics lab. My thesis work involved creating a label-free microfluidic cytometer to distinguish and sort rare biological cells. A conventional cytometer requires cells to be "labelled" with florescent tags, which is costly and time consuming. The label-free technique eliminates this step by using 2D Mie scatter patterns from a laser impacting off a single cell. This scatter pattern distinguishes the cell and it can then be sorted with a microfluidic flow control system.Throughout the process, I setup and worked in a biosaftey lvl 2 lab, used nanofabrication processes (lithography, wet etch, RIE, etc.) in a fabrication cleanroom, interfaced optical sensors with LabVIEW, processed digital images, and more.I was also involved in the research for a potable hydrocarbon sensor for environmental applications (i.e. oil sands tailings)Publications & Conference Presentations:[Poster, awarded best conference poster] Debbie Ha, M. Labview Developer
Built a LabVIEW interface for the XeF2 Etching System- Essential interface allowed users to customise etching times and gas flow rates while logging
Co-Op Testing Analyst, R & D
Tested factors affecting directional range of different wireless antenna designs for use in parking meters- Recommended best receiver heights, antennae orientation, and noted performance trends under different working weather conditions- Compared two different coin detector systems. Created and executed test plans, devised test jig & fixtures, performed tests, and analysed data in a timely manner- Researched solar panels and vehicle detection sensors
Co-Op Student, R & D
Designed and conducted lumen output tests on LED streetlights- Helped the roadway lighting industry clarify the method of calculating lumen output for roadway lighting applications to meet IESNA and CIE specifications by co-authoring a whitepaper on the effects of photopic & scotopic light under roadway conditions. Competitors boasting better power efficiency on erroneously calculated light levels were forced to correct their numbers- Performed tests with an integrating sphere and thermal cycling tests in a temperature chamber - Standardised methods of calculating efficiency and efficacy to determine product performance within the companyPublications:[Whitepaper] J. Josefowicz, & D. Ha. 2008. Vision & exterior lighting: Shining some light on scotopic & photopic lumens in roadway conditions. LED Roadway Lighting Ltd.
Co-Op Student, Conservation & Energy Department
Planned conservation programs involving municipalities in Nova Scotia, small business, labour and material vendors, and the public- Used 3D CAD skills to design new installations for the Annapolis Tidal Power Plant Museum- Worked with the Public Affairs department to design a convention booth using 3D CAD skills. Researched and created written material for displays- Trained employees prior to the Nova Scotia Home Builders Home show on EnergyStar© & EnerGuide Labels- Interacted with labour and material vendors, created proposals and oversaw marketing materials for the ‘Small Business Lighting Solutions’ program
