About Debbie Young

When people ask me what I do, I say ‘Death and Sex’. They look at me inquisitively and I explain. For part of the week creating spaces for open conversations about death, dying and grief and the other part of the week I am working with young people supporting them around their relationships and sexual health. But isn’t that a strange combination? Not at all. Many people feel uncomfortable talking openly and honestly about both death and sex. However, the skills we need to have confident conversations about both these important issues are the same. These conversations are important as they enable people to make informed choices and they improve health and well-being.I can support your organisations to have these open and confident conversations by:• Delivering training;• Facilitating workshops and events;• Hosting and facilitating Death & Grief Cafes;• Providing consultancy and project management services. Please visit my website https://debbieyoung.uk/ to discover how I can help your organisation approach these subjects with honest, open, and confident conversations.

Listed skills include Health Promotion, Policy, Training, Workshop Facilitation, and 31 others.

Nov 2022 - Present

Freelance Consultant And Trainer

London, United Kingdom

I have extensive experience in designing and delivering engaging and interactive training courses and workshops for practitioners, parents/carers, and young people. One of the most exciting parts of this for me is the creation of new and bespoke courses that thoroughly engage participants in the learning process and that also meet the requirements of the commissioner. I also have proven consultancy and project management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and achieve outcomes and effectively manage people and budgets. I have successfully designed and produced a range of resources, tools, and strategies. Some examples of my consultancy work include:• Consulting with local residents, who have a life-limiting illness, to hear about their experiences of using local end of life services and to find out what other support they need. This work is part of a wider project aiming to improve local end-of-life services. Commissioned by NHS North East London• Working with the Public Health Team at Haringey Council to create a series of Bitesize sexual health films for young people & practitioners as part of Haringey’s ‘We’re Open’ Campaign.• Working with Parents 1st UK to develop a new CACHE accredited qualification for volunteers and peer supporters delivering perinatal peer support.• Development of workshops for Hospice UKs Compassionate Employers Programme. This programme aims to help employers better support their employees who are affected by terminal illness, caring, & bereavement. https://www.hospiceuk.org/compassionate-employers• Development of a teenage pregnancy early identification risk & resilience toolkit to support practitioners in identifying those at risk of teenage pregnancy through the use of the CAF and to enable them to put packages of support in place - Government Office for London• Development of an Innovative Practice Guide: Meeting the Sexual Health Needs of Unaccompanied Minors – Teenage Pregnancy Unit, Department for Education

Co-Founder And Facilitator

North East London Death Cafe

I am an experienced Death Cafe host and facilitator and, along with Alberta Gutteridge, co-founded North East London Death Cafe. I have also facilitated Death Cafes in partnership with other organisations including Wellcome Collection, Willesden Jewish Cemetery and the University College London Hospital GP Training Programme.

Contraception & Sexual Health Nurse

London, United Kingdom

Freelance Trainer & Assessor

I am a freelance consultant, trainer and TAQA Assessor for Parents 1st UK. My consultancy support has involved helping Parents 1st develop a new CACHE accredited qualification for volunteer peer supporters and adapting their volunteer peer support training programme for online delivery. As a TAQA Assessor, I support Perinatal Peer Support Link Workers and volunteer Community Parents (peer supporters) to complete a Level 3 CACHE Qualification in Perinatal Peer Support. For many of the Community Parents, this is the first qualification they have undertaken since leaving school so the support involves mentoring and motivating and finding creative ways to assess their knowledge and skills rather than simply using written assignments.
