I am the lead writer of a quarterly report to Congress on U.S. efforts to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). I draw on my experience as a journalist, technical writer, editor, and communications specialist to produce each report, and develop media strategy to generate earned media coverage. I conceptualize and coordinate graphics, collaborate across agencies and geographies, and brief congressional staffers on developments. The position requires collaboration with senior leadership and clear and concise writing under tight deadline.

Reported and wrote six stories for Devex’s Land Matters Campaign, a month-long online campaign that highlighted the importance of land tenure to international development. The assignment included cultivating well-known experts in each field to write op-eds about each topic and creating "must-read"​ lists. The subjects included:--conflict resolution--food security--women's empowerment--the environment--transparency--economic development.

Researched and wrote about freedom of the press in several Middle Eastern countries as part of a team creating Freedom House's annual report on freedom of the press. The work required a in-depth knowledge of Middle East politics and the situation of journalists working in different countries, strong research skills, and excellent writing skills. Countries covered included Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, and Kuwait.

Created media strategy, drafted communications products, monitored press opinion, and cultivated English- and Arabic-language broadcast and print media to publicize SIGIR's work monitoring the use of U.S. funds earmarked to rebuild Iraq. Generated press coverage of SIGIR's mission and oversight work, pitching stories that appeared in The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio, CNN, Al-Jazeera, and more than two dozen other publications. Researched and wrote quarterly reports to the U.S. Congress detailing U.S. efforts to rebuild Iraq, including its government, civil society, public services, and economy; tracked funds allocated for these purposes.

Ramallah, West Bank

Shaped media coverage, designed marketing strategy, and trained local staff in the city of Ramallah during an emergency media campaign design to increase the visibility of Global Community (then called CHF International) during a month-long military conflict between Israel and the Hamas organization in Gaza. Global Community was working to provide humanitarian relief to Palestinians in Gaza and wanted to increase its media presence. Generated multiple mentions of the organization's work in major U.S. and Arabic-speaking news outlets, designed a marketing strategy to differentiate the Global Community brand, trained local staff on cultivating media sources, and updated the website.

Chicago, Baghdad, Cairo, Beirut

General assignment reporter. Covered the Iraq war and events in the Arab world, the 2004 president elections, soldiers returning from war, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the Muslim immigrant community in Chicago. Reported from Iraq, Cairo, and Beirut while on assignment overseas in 2003 and 2004. Covered the Muslim and Arab community, including immigration policy, political developments, religious topics, and security issues that affected the community in Chicago.

I won the fellowship in 2001 to study the rise of Al-Jazeera and its effect on Arab politics and media freedom.

Based in Jerusalem, I covered the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the region, including Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Morocco, Iraq, and Iran. I produced stories about politics and economics, peace initiatives, wars, regional developments, extremist groups, Israeli settlements, Palestinian refugees, water, religion, and archeology.
