I taught news writing at WKU while also working full time at The Daily News in Bowling Green. My students had the advantage of learning the craft from someone who is still in the daily trenches. Students in my class met community newsmakers, understood how and where to find the records that make a story compelling and gained a basic understanding of local government.

As the founding reporter/editor/photographer/videographer/webmaster for Wilson A.M. I did it all for this weekly publication within The Tennessean.

I was on the original team to help develop multiple micro websites that eventually became a part of the overall web department at The Tennessean. I took on several roles during this time working with the smaller Gannett-owned community newspapers to help them develop content for their sites and understand how that information would be displayed. I also monitored all of the online conversations on all of The Tennessean's websites. As The Tennessean's sites grew, I helped provide content and arrange that content across the community newspaper's sites and served as an online liaison between the community papers and The Tennessean.

I managed a team of 11 people who worked as reporters, page designers and sports writers. In addition to managing the day-to-day operation of this three-day-a-week publication, I also planned and managed the newsroom budget. When a position became open at The Tennessean to work in online, I jumped at the chance to learn about new media.

Provided coverage of more than 20 counties for The Courier-Journal's readers. During this stint of employment I covered the last public KKK rally to ever take place in Bowling Green, Ky. It was shut down early by a single, brave act of a young African-American woman, Laquetta Shepard, who crossed a barrier between Klansmen and those standing in opposition to the Klan. She stood alongside the Klansmen so that they could face her. Her silent stand shut down the rally early. To this day that story stands out as the single most important story I have ever written. Shepard's actions wrote the final chapter of the public Klan rallies in Bowling Green.

During this time period I covered a variety of topics ranging from hyper local Metro government reporting to issues at the Ft. Campbell Army base.

During two of Nashville's deadliest years for homicides, I worked as a night police reporter at The Tennessean. With many homicides occurring during my shift, I learned to work fast under tight deadlines to turn around stories that would place readers in the middle of the action.
