About Debi Mcguire
As both an instructor and an instructional designer I have one overriding goal; to help learners incorporate technology into their learning environment so that technology improves the quality and the experience of learning. I believe that ultimately the learner is responsible for his learning; however, it is my responsibility to guide the learner as he merges his life experiences into new knowledge. While it can be argued that every theory of learning is the “best” method to ensure that a learner gains new knowledge, I personally prefer the theory of constructivism because it recognizes the effect of past knowledge and social factors on an individual’s ability to learn. Technology is a major social factor that impacts learning, and its influence will continue to expand as new developments in technology occur. Technology is a double edged sword that can either promote or prevent learning; in my experience you cannot go by a person’s age and assume that they have had good or bad experiences with technology based on that one factor. Instructor For Business And Public Technologies Division
The big change for CIS 110 this year was reverting back to using SAM as a teaching/testing tool and updating to office 2016/365 - and I also got to undertake a non Microsoft class! Social Media Marketing - which had not be taught here before so a learning experience for both me and the students. Trying to figure out how the different tools should be taught since they are not used as much in this area of the state as in others. Most of the students did not have most of the common social media accounts that the book went over. It was interesting to go through the semester and try to figure out how to make the information relevant to them. Some of the ideas worked and some didn't - but next time hopefully we will find a few more that work. Using the backwards design method - what do I want the students to have at the end of the semester? at the end of the project? at the end of the paper? and figure out what they need to do in order to achieve those objectives.
