Due to her technical ability, her rapport with staff and passion for operational excellence, Debbie’s role with ABB was constantly evolving. In2009 after only 3 months with the company she was given the opportunity to undertake ABB’s operational excellence certification program, an extensive 2 year program requiring both class time and practical application with the realisation of significant savings to the company. For the practical application of this programme Debbie successfully led a companywide OpEx program with projects covering, production, supply chain management and engineering design. As program leader she was responsible for change management and communications. The end result of this project was the realisation of improved processes, significant savings and an increase in sales due to improved customer service. When it was decided to close one of three manufacturing sites in Australasia in late 2011, the improvements made during the 2 year OpEx project were a significant factor in the decision to close a plant in Australia and move it to the New Zealand site. Her strong leadership and collaborative style saw Debbie’s team expand to include process and manufacturing engineers, and when the production manager resigned Debbie was asked to step into this role, in addition to her OpEx manager’s position, until a replacement was found. Debbie is always willing to step up and take on any challenge offered to her. Her passion and drive to see things through to completion and her ability to bring the team with her led to her being appointed as Project lead for the transferring of the Australia operation including plant and inventory to New Zealand; a project that was completed on time and within budget.

As Technical Manager Debbie was the key contact between the company and regulatory authorities. Her honest and open approach saw the relationship between these two parties move from one of “them and us” to a collaborative relationship where all parties benefited. It was this same ability that fostered the breakdown of silos between departments, and between the company and union. Debbie’s success in getting people on the same page, meant that quality and compliance functions became a company-wide focus. This lead to the up skilling of staff, and greater staff engagement
