I wear many hats and I love them all! Professionally, I manage a medical billing, audit and consulting firm. But since it's true you can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl, I also remain a farmer. I love digging in the dirt. I love sharing with others the heritage of homesteading whether it involves gardening, animal husbandry or putting a great meal on the table, makes me no difference, I love it.Some years ago, a colleague said to me, "you're honest and that's what clients need most". We've been privileged to provide service to small group and solo practice physicians, emergency medical services, insurance companies, public health clinics, urgent care clinics, federal contractors and law firms. Years in traditional nursing roles served to hone problem solving and team building skills. Building on our love for the land, farming and good food, my husband and I have recently opened a local farm shop. The Medina Farm employs sustainable and biodynamic principles in the production of herbs, fruits, vegetables and livestock on 4 acres in Wharton, Texas. The farm sells seasonal produce and pastured poultry as well as goat milk soaps, lotions and select wellness products.

I have filed! The paperwork is done and my name will be on the Republican primary ballot as a candidate for Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. You may have seen the recent University of Texas poll showing I am currently the front runner in the race for comptroller. I'm working hard to help voters understand the important role the comptroller has in transparency and fiscal responsibility as well as in working to protect our economy from the instability of U.S. and global markets.

Was responsible for improved concurrent utilization review reporting and outcomes for one of the largest independent physician networks in the United States. The networks contracted with commercial plans including NYLCare of the Gulf Coast, PCA, HMO Texas, Anthem, HMO Blue, Pacificare; and managed medicare plans including NYLCare 65, PCA Qualicare, HMO Texas Golden Choice, and Pacificare Secure Horizons. Managed a registered nurse concurrent utilization review staff, provided education and training regarding medical determinations and the appropriateness of health services requested, facilitated the issuance of adverse determinations when indicated, developed/strengthened relationships with contracted hospitals, and assisted with recruitment/development of physician inpatient managers (intensivists/hospitalists) within those IPA’s/contracted hospitals. Provided strategic input through the analysis of utilization trends, planning and development of initiatives for improving outcomes, and review/revision of written policies/procedures as indicated.

Provided efficient and accurate evaluation of the validity and value of claims involving healthcare providers or medical care. Worked with senior partners to revise internal operating procedures to insure accurate reporting of firm operations. In a clinical role, assisted in the development of medical malpractice and personal injury lawsuits. Produced written summaries for purposes of educating counsel and facilitating appropriate settlement outcomes.

As a member of nursing administration, served on numerous hospital-wide committees which provided oversight to business operations and client relations. Clinically, was responsible for the management of specialty care units including a 13-bed skilled nursing facility and served in a managerial capacity for the 18-bed rehabilitation unit, and 12-bed psychiatric unit. Was responsible for the successful development and launch of the skilled nursing facility and work collaboratively to achieve CARF accreditation (rehab).
