Deborah Moon is a creative, a thinker, a leader, and a doer. Growing up as a dancer, visual artist, and cellist in upstate New York, she was surrounded by opportunities to develop unique philosophies about her educational experience. Deborah was able to follow her passions for the arts, the sciences, and philosophy by studying Visual Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Since grade school, Deborah was driven to be a champion for the arts in our education system and that influenced her senior project which resulted in an analysis of race in children's picture books as well as an art installation meant to evoke the sense of being a child who is constantly exposed to racial stereotypes since birth. In her junior year of college, Deborah committed to joining the teaching profession with Teach For America Hawai'i. After concluding her two years as a corps member, Deborah continued to empower the keiki at varying degrees of influence: at her placement school as a Student Services Coordinator and Department Chair, across the islands by serving as an instructional mentor for first year TFA elementary and Special Education teachers, and across the state of Hawai'i by joining the Hawai'i State Teacher Fellows. In the words of John Cage, "Find a place you trust." For Deborah, this place is anywhere the cycle of learning and growth is alive.
