Website: https://deboraando.de/Debora Ando is a visual artist artist from São Paulo. She lived for 13 years in Dublin, where she lectured in the National College of Art and Design. In August 2019 Ando moved to Germany, where she currently lives and works. Her studio is located in the Künstlerhaus Dortmund.Since November 2020 she is a part-time lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Dortmund where she teaches Printmaking (Intaglio and Relief) as well as Drawing. In the same year she was the recipient of the Grafik aus Dortmund Kalender Preis. In 2021 Ando received a grant for her project with Cyanotype “As the Universe Expands, Space is in Motion" from the Ministerium für Kultur und Wissenschaft des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen. She was also invited to take part in a residency and exhibition at the Museum für Druckkunst Leipzig. In 2022 she will have a solo exhibition at the Torhaus Galerie in Dortmund. The focus of her teaching praxis aims to help students develop high standard practices within contemporary graphic arts. She believes that printmaking should be understood and developed in the context of the 21st century, where the focus is on the poetics of the graphic expression, this way making manifest the combination between critical thinking and the application of technical processes that can reflect the students' subject-matter. In this sense she is against the technique as an end in itself. Moreover as lecturer she has created many internship and residencies opportunities in collaboration with professional studios where the students can develop their skills outside the academic realm. The structure of her extensive teaching program includes drypoint, hard/soft ground etching, aquatint (spit bite, sugar lift), multiplate techniques and colour printing, and the foundation of printmaking art history.
