As time passed within the next year and a half, I also filled in and trained to substitute for the normal Secretary and was promoted the next year as she and the Principal were both promoted to District Office Staff. This was a very poor predominantly African American population and I performed the job duties of 3-4 people as one person. The most important part of my job was in communicating with both students and parents as well as staff, sometimes having to intermediate between them. I know that how I handle the situation could calm thereby diffusing a tense situation or I could implode it. Therefore, it was always important that I communicate friendliness smiling giving direct eye contact as I express understanding and attempt to shift their attitude from being irate to cooperative. The second most important was effective routine organization because of the amount of work load to handle. In all, I worked there 10 years and loved my job. I only left when my husband passed away leaving me alone to take care of our then 11 month old baby girl who is hearing and vision impaired. Show less
