Principal ecologist/assistant manager for a newly-built multimillion-euro ecotourism/ education facility in North Kerry. The 9ha site consists of an interpretive centre adjoining a newly landscaped wetland area with a viewing tower, and a large man-made freshwater lake. The wetland had been designed to provide a microcosm of the different wetland habitats found in Tralee Bay.• Guiding the development of the wetland ecosystem, managing water inputs and controls and preventing invasive species and pest control.• Surveying the wetland community regularly, primarily ground-dwelling macroinvertebrates and the plant community.• Devising and presenting a tour guiding programme for visitors to the wetland.• Devising and delivering a large range of educational courses for children from National School age up to Leaving Certificate.• Overseeing undergraduate students from IT Tralee and UCC carrying out a range of ecological projects on the wetland.• Liaising with local authority representatives regarding the management, infrastructure and water quality of the site.• Organising regular public information events.• Working with national wildlife charities, NGOs and the local authority on conservation initiatives.• As assistant manager responsible for the day-to-day running of the centre, dealing with suppliers/contractors, working with the general public and managing staff.
