Deborah is a psychotherapist with over 20 years of clinical experience and a Ph.D. in infant/early childhood development with an emphasis in infant mental health and developmental disorders. Her Ph.D. study was on perinatal women's lived experience of traumatic birth, breastfeeding, caregiving, and bonding. Her research interests: perinatal women's issues related to breastfeeding, traumatic birth, post-traumatic growth, cross-cultural parenting, and health/healthcare disparities for women (especially women of color). Deborah developed the bioEcoLogical PEriNatal WomAn (ELENA) model to understand how systems, such as cultural norms and policies, may impede optimal birth and breastfeeding outcomes. Deborah has presented domestically and internationally (Australia, New Zealand, UK) on topics such as traumatic birth, breastfeeding as a protective factor, the ELENA model, and health disparities for U.S. women of color.
