Marine Molecular Ecology / BiologyRoyal Belgian Institute Of Natural Sciences Apr 2023 - PresentBrussels Metropolitan AreaResearch theme: Biodiversity and EvolutionResearch focus: environmental DNA and classic molecular ecology of marine fauna (community to population composition, diversity, phylogeographyResearch areas: Belgian Part of the North Sea (eDNA); coastal habitats in the Western Antarctic Peninsula and abyssal deep-sea (classic molecular barcoding). My research takes me to offshore fieldwork onboard the RV BELGICA, to labwork for sensitive eDNA/DNA extractions and further processing of molecular samples, to computing and bioinformatic analyses, completion of external reports and research paper publications. -

Bsc Thesis: Migration Freshwater FishNiwa Jan 2020 - Jul 2020Fish species present in freshwater systems in the Northern island of New Zealand, betweenJanuary and May, are various. The ones expected are inanga, banded kokopu, common bullies, redfin bullies, smelt, eels and giant kokopu. Their freedom of movement between waterbodiescan be delayed or prevented by human infrastructures, such as culverts, weirs and dams.Especially for migratory fish species that undertake significant migrations to access diversehabitats essential for their survival at different life-stages. The New Zealand Fish passagesguidelines sets out recommended practice for the design of instream infrastructure to providefish passages. However, the speed ability for the fish species stated above to move upstream a passage is unknownand therefore no comparison is yet possible. The effectivity of fish passage cannot bedetermined for those species. My goal is to research, test and critically assess the swimming speed of each species of fish, so that effectivity of fish passages will be determined and open the door to improvments. -
Research Intern/ Glass Eels MigrationWaterschap Scheldestromen Dec 2018 - May 2019Middelburg, Zeeland, NetherlandsResearch about glass eel migration at their arrival in front of pumping station of polders. How many glass eels can efficiently move upstream from this anthropogenic barrier? What is the most attractive location?
