About Deborah Withey
Deborah received the International Society of News Design's highest honour, the Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in design, transmedia storytelling, illustration, mentoring and art direction. As well, she is the recipient of Ball State University's Majeri Award for Excellence and Innovation in Visual Journalism Education. She is an experienced and passionate creative director and lecturer with a demonstrated history of leading, working, and collaborating in the media and health care sector. Deborah's inspirational design-thinking workshops bring out an individual's creativity, rejuvenation of spirit, and self-expression. Debs has the rare opportunity to work with both the young and the elderly as a creative practitioner for the Arts Council of Wales' Lead Creative Schools and in her role with Age Cymru as artist mentor with the cARTrefu programme. Deborah is particularly qualified to work, through the medium of art, with people of all ages and learning differences and those with cognitive, emotional and physical health challenges. She has particular experience working with individuals with aphasia and forms of dementia. Deborah runs Cheese + Pickles Studio for adults, together with Henry Hedgepodge Academy of Art for children aged 8 to 18 from The Green Shed in Haverfordwest, her support work is both ONLINE and face 2 face. Henry Hedgepodge is an ART SCHOOL for children from seven to 107 with creativity, freedom of expression and experimentation as its focus. The school is located on the second floor of The Green Shed in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales, SA61 1XE.Children are naturally expressive and the creativity they hold inside can blossom with the right tutoring. Parent and child, as well as group workshops range from craft to fine art, and from willow fish lanterns to recycled Cubist collage. After school art lessons are available in the disciplines of drawing, painting, sculpture and design (print + digital) for primary schoolchildren aged 8 and over. GCSE art tutoring and A-level portfolio-building workshops in print, textile and digital design run weekly throughout term time. Deborah has particular experience working with children on the spectrum and with all those living with low-confidence, emotional and physical illness, bereavement and stroke survivors with aphasia. The sessions are led by owner, Deborah Withey, a creative and therapeutic arts practitioner, award-winning educator, illustrator, print and data-visualization designer who can gently lead children and adults into the discovery and development of their individual creative talents.

Through the medium of art we find joyThe art of creating offers pathways into our emotional interiorHello, I’m Deborah Withey, the director of cheese + pickles creative and therapeutic arts studio for art on prescription for adults, and Henry Hedgepodge Academy of Art, a space for creative learning, self-expression, and art in literacy + numeracy (STEAM) for children aged seven to 18. The school is centered in The Green Shed, in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. I am BAAT (British Association of Art Therapists) trained to work with children in care, and with individuals of any age with ADL, ASC, low self-esteem, aphasia, grief and transgender adjustments. Since emigrating to Wales in 2009, I have led educational and therapeutic workshops for Pembrokeshire County Council’s Adult Learning and Springboard family programmes, Arts Council of Wales’ Lead Creative Schools, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and have been a guest speaker at the Stroke Hub Wales lectures, Cardiff Metropolitan University, and the Department of Nursing, Swansea University, as well as other UK and American organisations and charities.
