They asked and I said YES!While just as remote as the North Rim, this place has a different feel. I’m isolated, yet close enough to an ER to make a difference. A close call changes you. The job becomes not a job but a challenge. Cryptic words I cannot speak out loud. Nobody prepared me for this, yet I feel I’ve prepared my whole life for this journey. Not your typical EHS job. And for that, I’m grateful.

This is a tough one. I’ve moved from a tribe into a remote community where we eat, work, and play in the same sandbox. I feel like all the banter I’ve tossed out there came home here. I joke that I pass out bandaids and teach ladder safety. I do. But, I genuinely love and care for these people. I want them safe. I want them alive. I want them to be happy.It’s a tall order in a remote location where one has already died.So, what do I do?I listen. I meet people where they are. I hug them and ask if they are okay. That might not be in my job description, but they trust me to warn me of hazards. Both personal and on the job. I have their back and I protect them to the best of my ability.
