In the past, I have served as a social worker in juvenile court, prosecutor of sex crimes, and foster parent to abused children. Those experiences have given me the skills to guide my clients through legal proceedings that they find unfamiliar, confusing, and sometimes downright frightening. My experience has given insights into organizations that serve children and youth. I advise child care centers, camps, churches, schools, mentoring groups and other youth-serving organizations (YSOs). People in YSOs consult me about problems ranging from disability accommodations to investigating or defending claims of sexual abuse. I am able to help them look past the turmoil and drama of the moment to find practical, lasting solutions. I make my living as a lawyer, but what I do is take care of other people’s children. My speaking and writing reflect the life lessons that my foster children, stepchildren, and grandchildren have taught me. My book, “Raising Other People’s Children: What Foster Parenting Taught Me About Raising a Blended Family,” is scheduled for publication in May 2021.

This job is where I learned to try cases. I tried almost 40 jury trials and several hundred bench trials. I learned to try cases on a few hours notice, with witnesses whose testimony was exactly opposite what they had told me before trial, and whose memory was impaired by medical or substance abuse challenges. This was one of the formative experiences of my career, and experiences for which I always will be grateful.I prosecuted violent crime, sexual assaults, child abuse cases, drug trafficking, white collar crime, and offenses on federal land. I received numerous awards from investigative agencies, and was the district coordinator for prosecuting crimes against children. During this time, I also served in the community as a foster parent for abused children.

I handled litigation and appellate work for this nonprofit legal foundation focusing on free markets and property rights. My work included a successful argument before United States Supreme Court.

I was an associate in the litigation department, and assisted in a variety of business disputes and insurance defense matters.
