Associate Director of Specifications is a newly created role. Upon retirement of the current Director of Specifications, William Pegues, I will assume the role and title of Director of Specifications. WDG is a national architecture, planning, and interior design firm with a staff of 150 that have produced over 500 major buildings including commercial office, multi-family residential, higher education, hospitality, senior living, secure government facilities and mixed use - since 1938. I am rejoining the firm after approximately 7-1/2 years.

CSI National Technical Committee develops and maintains technical standards for the architecture and construction industry. Currently we are supporting the UniFormat Task Team in new infrastructure areas, reviewing PPD format, and reviewing various industry initiatives.

Architectural specification writing for high rise, healthcare, LEED and international projects, along with master specifications for organizations, and associated technical research. Our mission is to enable the designer’s vision through precise specifications.

Write architectural specifications, provide project team leadership, coordinate design and performance requirements for complex and fast track buildings. Adapt to a variety of project delivery structures and schedules. Organize project information and define procurement and construction requirements through interactions with Owners, Contractors, Engineers, Cost Estimating, and the whole project team. Typical work includes: understanding design intent, negotiating scope, ensuring documentation is sufficient, quality assurance and quality control, product research, evaluation and selection, understanding and meeting building and energy codes, articulating desired skills and qualifications, submittal review, evaluating laboratory and independent testing results, construction procedures and mockups. I perform research and write papers about design and construction data management, workflow and process definition, and exchange models. I just finished leading a working group for CSI for a white paper “Value Engineering (VE) - Strategies, Processes, and Emerging Technologies”.

Produced first iteration at 101st Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers, Denver CO then installed permanently on the 10th floor of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Headquarters. Coordinated several other exhibits including ESRI DC Office and user conference, 2nd iteration at New York Public Library, Science Business and Industry Library, New York NY. Currently participating on advisory board.

NIEM is a data exchange model used across federal, state, local, and tribal governments. Business Architecture Committee (NBAC) June 2009 through November 2013. OmniClass facility types was built into Version 3 to advance public safety, child services and others utilizing NIEM to exchange information across domains.

Version 2 Planning Committee, Technical Subcommittee, Nomination Committee. Version 3 Project Committee. Submitted the W3C XML ballot which was accepted. Worked with the committee to categorize the ballots and follow an ISO standard for standards so there is more consistency. Submitted a blue sky ballot for an NBIMS reference architecture which is still in progress.

A project to deliver digital building information to first responders. The objective of the Open Floor Plan Display / Exchange project is to develop a lightweight, portable, platform-neutral, electronic display format for exchanging building information, primarily 2 dimensional floor plans, to deliver basic building layouts to local fire departments and related Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Initial emphasis is on public buildings such as K-12, Campuses, Healthcare, and Justice System Facilities

OmniClass is a multi-faceted strategy for classification of the built environment used in Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, online product data, facility management and other applications.

Write original technical specifications and coordinate specifications by others including civil, electrical, mechanical, and specialty metallurgy engineers, landscape architects, and other designers. Specifications were prepared to meet Federal requirements including the special requirements of the Pentagon Renovation Project [PENREN] while preserving the integrity of the concept design by Keith Kaseman and Julie Bechman [KBAS].

Write architectural specifications and organize project information. Review drawing terminology and assembly details. Coordinate all phases of Construction Documents. Continuously educate myself and the architects in industry standards and best practices. Update and maintain master specifications. Research and evaluate material performance, manufacturer and contractor capabilities. Write door hardware and help ensure compliance with local building authorities. Coordinate consultants specifications including incorporation of Structural Engineer's comments, review of Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing (MEP), Landscape, Elevator, Security, Civil and Landscape specifications. Work to improve the office knowledge base, and solve repeat requests for information through standard details and specifications.

Researched special geometry, glass, and photovoltaic requirements for a neat little building next to Union Station DC.

Space planning, story telling, design and construction documents. Communicate design intent to a wide range of people from owners and officials to the trades. Coordinated work within office and with curators, architects, engineers, specialty contractors and consultants. Typical elements include unusual artifacts, innovative audiovisual and lighting designs, immersive and recreated environments, dimensional and large scale graphics, and interactive computer systems. Produced and coordinated complex drawing packages, scope of work databases and finish schedules. Wrote specifications, initiated and maintained comprehensive punch lists.
