Community Development Strategies for Smart CitiesCities and communities are grappling with the largest global economic, social, and environmental shifts in modern history. Populations are generally aging and shrinking. Global trade and manufacturing are experiencing disruptive shifts. Massive influx of residents from rural to urban centers place further burdens on already strained infrastructure, economic and social ecosystems. Innovation cycles are also faster. Technology is less-expensive to buy and maintain. And communities want to know - can adopting technology help us to improve services and reduce costs? Where do we begin?Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access to resources happen when a diverse community is engaged as co-creators in 1) identifying challenges to be solved; 2) prioritizing these challenges; 3) developing collaborative solutions with civic leaders and staff. Community members must also be engaged in identifying the types of smart city technology they are comfortable using. Resources are scarce, and the people most impacted must be invited to be involved in the decision-making. I am passionate about educating and empowering civic and private leaders to build technology from the people up - not the internet up.
