Profile bio

About Debra Deen Kerby

My passion is working alongside volunteer boards and social change leaders to guide them through times of organizational change, including leaderships transitions and organizational re-visioning. Starting my career in the Canadian packaged goods sector, I made a mid-career shift to leverage my private sector experience to make meaningful contribution to organizations committed to social change. It has been deeply rewarding to step into senior leadership roles with global, international and national organizations including Right To Play, Canadian Feed the Children and The Learning Partnership.Throughout my career as a social impact leader, I have successfully led change management and organizational transformation initiatives across multiple stages of operations, from start-ups, rapid growth phases and through turnarounds, merger analysis and operational wind-downs.As an Interim leader, my goal is always seeking to create a positive and productive environment during times of significant and complex organizational change by co-creating a shared vision; engaging in courageous and respectful dialogue; and creating the space for a collaborative, solutions-driven approach that keeps the community and the mission front and centre. I am a big believer in the power of building good governance practices based on my own experience both reporting to and sitting on nonprofit boards, with results recognized by the Financial Post, Charity Intelligence, and MoneySense, respectively, for excellence in financial transparency, delivering impact, and organizational reporting. My educational background includes an MSc in International Development Management from the London School of Economics, and an MBA in International Business and Corporate Strategy from Edinburgh. I am an alumni of the Interim Executives Leadership Academy based out of Seattle, Washington, as well as of the Harvard Business School Executive Program on Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management.

Listed skills include Fundraising, Strategic Planning, Leadership, Strategy, and 39 others.

After taking some extended time in the Canadian wilderness following the successful wind-down of The Learning Partnership, and continuation of our mission through other Canadian organizations, I reflected on how I can contribute more broadly to the social impact sector I love ~ working with a wider variety of non-profit leaders and organizations who are committed to creating a better world. My time in the wilderness inspired me to work alongside nonprofit boards and leaders who are navigating times of significant change ~ leveraging my experience and expertise at the global, international and national level to support senior leadership capacity in the social impact sector. If you’re a volunteer board director or Executive Director in the social impact sector seeking access to senior leadership capacity I provide:* interim executive leadership to ensure stability for the team and continuity of mission, operational excellence and good governance while the search is underway for your next permanent leader* strategic support in board governance, strategic planning and succession planning to successfully navigate through organizational and leadership change* Mentoring senior team leaders, new and not so new, as they navigate through times of change

The Learning Partnership's (TLP) mission was to prepare today's students to become tomorrow's problem solvers and changemakers. Launched in 1993, TLP was a national Canadian charitable organization with a 29-year history of delivering innovation programs nationally to publicly-funded education by catalyzing collaboration across Education, Business and Government in the service of students, Educators and Executive Administrators. In my role as President & CEO, I led the organization through significant organizational transformation. These initiatives include: strengthening governance and financial practices, evidence-based strategic planning, streamlining operations and, over the course of the global pandemic, transforming partnerships and programs through the lenses of global innovation, student impact, and diversity, equity and inclusion. In June 2022, despite significant success, we made the difficult decision for a rapid wind down of the organization due to forward looking financial constraints. We navigated this successfully by prioritizing continuation of our mission, care for our staff and the legacy of our reputation across our national stakeholders. In the autumn of 2022, TLP's four student innovation programs (Take Our Kids to Work, Entrepreneurial Adventure, Coding Quest and Welcome to Kindergarten) were successfully transferred to four Canadian organizations (Students Commission of Canada, Let's Talk Science, Pinnguaq and Canadian Education Warehouse) to amplify the impact of TLP's innovation programs for future students and Educators. TLP publicly wound down as an organization in December 2022.

CFTC's mission is to unlock the potential of children through community-led action in Canadian Indigenous communities and around the world including Bolivia, Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda. Key areas of focus were food security, child education, building community capacity and leadership through community-led impact-focused programming respecting the local culture, tradition and wisdom of First Nation's communities in Canada as well as communities in Bolivia, Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda. During my tenure, CFTC became an award winning organization. In 2018 CFTC was recognized by the Financial Post & Charity Intelligence for the third year in a row as one of the Top Canadian Charities in terms of accountability, transparency and excellence in reporting impact. CFTC also achieved repeat accreditation with the Imagine Canada Standards Program for Good Governance in 2013 and 2018 ~ consistently demonstrating excellence in board governance, financial accountability, fundraising (with private donors and institutional funders), international staff management and volunteer involvement.
