My background encompasses 26 years as the managing editor of an award-winning weekly community newspaper, with extensive experience writing, editing, proofreading, managing editorial content, supervising and coaching reporting staff, layout and page design, and supervision of pagination staff. I additionally managed the publication's social media, and interacted extensively with the public and the community.My journalism writing experience includes feature writing, city beat, investigative reporting, and breaking news, as well as feature photography. I served as a judge in the annual Better Newspapers Contest for the California News Publishers Association (CNPA) for 25 years, and as an essay judge for the Yolo County Academic Decathlon for 12 years.I've left the journalism field to venture into non-fiction writing. My first book, "Elements of Horse Spirit — The Magical Bond Between Humans and Horses," was published in June 2020. I am thrilled to join the Llewellyn team, and am working on my second book. I am a freelance writer for SageWoman and Witches & Pagans magazines, focusing on feature stories about interesting individuals in the Pagan community. I also love writing about wine and wine tasting in Napa, Sonoma, and Yolo Counties, which is the focus of my "Another Way to Wine": www.easterngatewaynapa.com. In my 27-year background as a columnist, I explored everything from politics to parenting to current events to humor, and have 16 state and national awards. My column appeared in a variety of newspapers and publications, and I was nationally syndicated in the early 2000s. Although I no longer write a print column, I occasionally blog on my website, debradeangelo.com, and for iPinion Syndicate, which I co-founded and served as CEO and managing editor for seven years. I resigned in 2016, but remain on as a senior advisor and contributor. I edited and self-published two iPinion Syndicate anthologies: "Belly Shame — Stories From the Gut" and "Cats, Dogs, and Other Things That Poop in the Yard." I additionally co-founded the Wolfskill News & Review, a student newspaper at Wolfskill High School in Winters, California, and served as a mentor for their journalism class for three years. Before taking a journalism path, I was employed in the social services field, including crisis intervention, career planning, and case management. I also served on the local Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, including three years as Board President, and 13 years as the entertainment coordinator for a major local street festival.
