Profile bio

About Debra Hellbach

I am a life-long learner who is passionate about domestic food production (aka food sovereignty). I have dedicated my career to helping people make and market good food. My journey began at BC Packers, an iconic seafood processor and came full circle as I led the creation of a Centre for Seafood Innovation (CSI) at Vancouver Island University (VIU).For the past 3 years I have applied my knowledge to demonstrating how a Centre for Seafood Innovation (CSI) can help BC seafood entrepreneurs address challenges and capture opportunities. The CSI helped catalyze innovation among seafood entrepreneurs while providing valuable experiential learning to students through programs like the Seafood Business Accelerator, Seafood Challenges and Let’s Talk Seafood and Eat it Too public education events. By all accounts a success, CSI serves as a springboard for future seafood innovation support in British Columbia. While the CSI trial at Vancouver Island University ended March 2024, I continue to seek avenues to help BC seafood entrepreneurs. I am THRILLED to be able to continue the Seafood Business Accelerator program through Coastal Nations Fisheries and the T. Buck Suzuki Foundation.Engaging with students and community members has been a particularly rewarding aspect of my work. As a food evangelist I believe everyone should know the importance of producing food and I incorporate this messaging in everything I do. My excitement for the future is fueled by the prospect of more play and less work! Life is good, and I am grateful for the enriching experiences on this remarkable journey. 🌱🍤 #FoodInnovation #SeafoodAdvocate #LifelongLearner
