Debra Waller Email and Phone Number
A 70+ year old veteran who is a businessman, came to me. He had experienced a horrific medical event that left him with little usable vision. "I don't know what you can do" he told me, "but I am not able to read the newspaper anymore nor continue doing the things I've done everyday." I assured him things look as dark as they are going to, because from this point on we are working toward regaining all of that lost independence. I worked with him to them identify the things he enjoyed doing and how he had done them. Then I started showing him new ways, adaptive methods and equipment, for doing those very activities! One of the first things we did was make his use of vision more comfortable. I introduced him to UV filters, the tint he chose that worked best for him. They helped immediately. Next we went to his microwave, as he said he was no longer able to use it effectively. We added clear "bump dots" of different size ans shape Ito the various desired settings. He was now able to heat up his coffee and left overs as HE desired, without additional help. As he began regaining his independence, he was totally encouraged, and with the help of additional resources is back to living life as he did before.. I became interested in my current line of work when I toured Bosma Enterprises in 2006. Being visually impaired myself and having overcome many obstacles, It is my passion to help others with like challenges. It is very rewarding to see people who have lost their self confidence bounce back and realize they can live successfully being both independent and interdependent. When presented with a situation I identify goals with the individual, in the environment and move beyond the circumstances. Together we discover effective methods for resolving or removing barriers to low vision. There is no such word as "can't". Drawing on experience, knowledge and other professionals as my accountability team those I serve enjoy successful and satisfying lives.
