I came from a very dysfunctional family and social work was my life before it became my profession. I knew there was a better way to live - away from the drama and chaos of drugs and alcohol, though I had never seen it until I decided to make it happen for me. I am proud to be a part of an amazing group of professionals working to bring about lifestyle changes in peoples lives, so they can have their children in their care, I understand the culture of poverty, I walked that path and lived in those shoes. I understand addiction, trauma and pain, its in my blood and lineage. I know what it's like to grow up wondering who you really are.... The removal of my mother from our tribe when she was young gave her many issues that she never healed from, including attachment disorder, PTSD, anger and aggression, alcoholism and drug addiction. She was badly abused in the Wisconsin foster care system. Despite not having a childhood filled with happy memories, I decided to make positive changes in my life so my kids would be able to reach their dreams someday. I lead my life by example (no drinking, smoking or drugs) and I am committed to social justice. I want to help people to help themselves. It is so rewarding to see people newly empowered and ready to live life the way they really want to. Education has been an important part of my life; I want to lead as many people to higher education as possible. I went from a homeless, 11 year old middle school drop out to college graduate (Dec. 09) and went on to earn my masters (2011) and still plan to go back and finish my PhD. It has been a long, hard journey; I am thankful for the mentors and professors who have listened and supported me along the way. I am even more thankful for my family; my children and my wonderful husband. Believe in your dreams because they really can come true.Specialties: Working with people from diverse cultures. I am Culturally aware and I fully admire our differences that make us all unique.

Dhs Meeting FacilitatorFamily Skillbuilders Jun 2014 - Oct 2016Hillsboro, OregonFamily SkillBuildersDHS Meeting FacilitationPart of SPRF (strengthening, preserving, reunifying families), this position at Washington County DHS (Hillsboro) is part of a strategic effort to use strengths-based social work to create parent/child reunification plans, have a diverse, "focused" dialogue and to create positive interactions between worker and client while providing support and knowledge sharing to an overwhelmed workforce where negativity thrives. Well.... not in my meeting. Let's put our heads together and share our thoughts and ideas and make things happen. Working together isn't hard, it's teaching other people to really listen, and pay attention to unspoken needs and being aware that different is not a weakness, it's a strength. -
Director Of DevelopmentTogether2 Mar 2013 - Aug 2015Portland, OregonTogether Squared is a new 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a committed focus of providing responsible social services to children and families in need. This includes an international program called, Safe Families for Children (SFFC). SFFC is a voluntary, faith-based support network that develops church leadership with training and compassion to impact needy families when a crisis first happens. We launched SFFC in the Greater Portland area in October 2013 and are still building our network of caring host families and parent mentors. If you are interested in being a volunteer, please contact Debra at: debra@together2.org. All folks who may have contact with children must be prescreened, trained and undergo a background check.I am currently working with the Colossae Church in Tigard; they have taken on Safe Families as part of their vision to help those in need. They have a beautiful thriving church and many are coming forward to host kids in need of a safe temporary place to stay. Colossae has agreed to be a lead church and will help those from other churches get involved with Safe Families and be a hub for other churches that are interested in joining.

CoordinatorSafe Families For Children - Greater Portland Mar 2013 - Aug 2015Washington, Multnomah And Clackamas CountiesTo develop the first Portland area chapter of Safe Families for Children (SFFC). Safe Families is an international movement of compassion that is changing the way child welfare works. SFFC is a safety net for those who are struggling with crisis and need some additional help and support who have not harmed their children. SFFC chapters partner with local churches and communities and local leaders to embrace and create supportive networks that can provide wraparound type of support services and child placement into safe, loving homes. All host families are screened and vetted and each placement monitored from start to return. Parents do not lose parental rights and are able to reunify when they are ready. SFFC is an international movement that is dedicated to: child welfare deflection, child abuse prevention and family support and stabilization. My work involved: working with the national organization and learning the model. To recruit interested churches and people who are committed to making a valuable difference in the lives of children and families in crisis. To do presentations, send information, run meetings and to build a network of caring people committed to this cause. To engage DHS, other crisis responders along with other potential partners. To screen, vet and train host families and to offer assistance to the teams that are growing and building. To create a safety net for the children and families that don't have the need for foster care and want to work on their issues in an alternative and effective manner.

Community Development SpecialistNicwa 2010 - Sep 2013Portland, Oregon AreaI started as an MSW intern, and became a national tribal coach and recruiter for the Leadership Academy for Middle Managers (LAMM) program, then I became a Community Development Specialist, providing resources and training. My favorite training was working with tribes and teaching them positive Indian parenting skills so they could teach their families how to build stronger family relationships and stop the impact of historical trauma. For 8 months, I worked in events and coordinated the 2013 Nicwa annual conference in Oklahoma. I also worked with the requests for information that come to NICWA on a regular basis for information and referral services. I provided information to parents and child welfare workers on the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA).

Achievement Coach (Academic Coach)Native American Youth And Family Center May 2009 - Apr 2010Portland, Oregon AreaI helped students in high school and students of ALL ages and stages make a life changing game plan to go to college, and use school as a ladder to the next step in life. Whether they needed a little help or a lot, I encouraged them and built their confidence, helped them to make goals and look at the big picture and together we brainstormed ways to figure out how to overcome any obstacles that stood in their way. I took the student to college tours and assisted with enrollment and the financial aid process. I taught a class at NAYA, called the Post-Secondary Education Class every other month. I put on workshops and trainings, and had financial aid nights. I helped students qualify for the IDA program (Individual Development Account). Which is basically a matched savings plan; I also helped them make an academic spending plan for when they reached their savings goal. I am a student advocate and helped alert students when I heard of scholarships that might pertain to them, I helped them write application letters, scholarship letters and more. I also wrote a monthly Education Newsletter and featured successful students in personal stories to show others that dreams can come true and to take the chance on education and self-empowerment.I used the same skills for myself that I used with my students and was accepted into graduate school at PSU with advanced standing and a full scholarship. I did not plan to leave this position, however I didn't want to pass up such a great opportunity to advance my education. -
Family Child Care Owner & OperatorClayton Kid Care Jan 1990 - Aug 2003Portland, Oregon AreaI ran a full scale profession family child care business that held the highest standards for state certification. We had a daily lesson plan, art lesson, field trips and more. I closed my business to go back to school so I could help people and families in other ways. I noticed lots of hurting people that needed help during 12 years of business. It was a very fulfilling experience, and i still keep in contact with many of the kids & parents that I cared for.
