About Debra Cleveland
Observing first hand the social injustices of apartheid South Africa led me to a career in journalism as a features writer. A move to London in 1987 saw me freelance copy editing for the Financial Times, The Sunday Times, The Times and The Daily Telegraph, before joining The Sunday Times business team first as a sub editor and then as assistant business editor. Marriage to an Australian journalist prompted a move to Sydney, where I joined the Australian Financial Review as deputy companies editor and later expanded the Smart Money personal finance section into the launch of the Weekend AFR. What I have always loved about journalism is telling people's stories and bringing finance to life. It can be a dry subject but those who handle their finances properly have much bigger choices in life.
