As George Elliot once said, "It's never too late to be what you might have been." And so it has been with me. This later start in life, with its many priorities, has only served to demonstrate the desire, determination and commitment I have in accomplishing the educational and professional goals I have set for myself.I didn't become truly interested in the many facets of food till I met my husband. I traveled with him to various parts of the U.S. and other countries and discovered how much I enjoyed learning about the local foods and culture. I began to understand the different emotional connections people have with food. Food is a part of life's celebrations and sorrows. It's part of our traditions and plays an important role in our life memories. As my life moved forward my interest and love of food progressed to wanting to understand the effects of what I put into my body nutritionally. Throughout my pregnancies, lactation and the various stages of my children's development my quest to know and understand more about the effect of nutrition on the body continued. I was happy to share whatever I learned with anyone and everyone. When I started running, for sanity's sake, I became an experiment of one. I discovered how my daily diet had an effect on my running. I learned through trial and error what was the best way for me to fuel my body during a long run or race. It was through running that I found the courage to follow my dream and the perseverance to keep me going in the direction I desired. It was in the same week that I completed my first 12 hour ultra that I decided to send my college application in. Three weeks later I was a part-time student in Nutrition and Dietetics. Now through relentless forward motion I have my eye on the finish line and will be graduating with my degree in Nutrition in May of 2014. The longest ultra I have ever completed!
