As the current director of the master's degree program in criminal justice, former department chair, and a professor at the University of New Haven and formerly, John Jay College, I have got to meet some of the best CJ students in the country! I have over thirty years of experience in the field of policing, retiring as a chief of police. I have over twenty years of experience in criminal justice higher education, and I'm currently involved in developing and delivering high-quality criminal justice programs and conducting research in the field of policing and public policy. I have chaired several statewide boards on policing, eyewitness identification, and Connecticut's Racial Profiling Prevention task force. I was also the co-founder/co-owner and director of R&D of NexGen Public Safety Software, as well as a member of the International Chiefs of Police (IACP) research advisory board. I leverage my Ph.D. in Criminal Justice and other varied experiences to provide both theory-based and applied knowledge to our students for a comprehensive and practical perspective on the challenges and opportunities in the criminal justice system.My active research agenda supports teaching and publishing on criminal justice topics, including the use of force, empirical research on policing, machine learning, and AI strategies for understanding applications relevant to criminal justice and analyzing the meta-narratives of police organizations and culture. My personal mission is to enhance the organizational efficacy, accountability, and legitimacy of police agencies and professionals through evidence-based interventions, policy analysis, and best practices. I have published multiple books and articles on topics such as police union impact, crime prevention, contagious fire, police education and training, and police recruitment. I also enjoy mentoring and supporting the next generation of criminal justice leaders and practitioners.
