Dechlan was recalled to Defence service and deployed for a 6 month tour of duty on operations in Afghanistan and the Middle East. He was the inaugural Chief Engineer in Joint Task Force 633 on OPERATION SLIPPER responsible for all engineer support to all Australian forces in the Middle East Area of Operations including Afghanistan, Iraq and the Gulf.

As Group Manager Defence Clients, Dechlan held global responsibility for management of SKM’s relationships with Defence clients including Australia’s Department of Defence, Defence contractors, construction companies and Comprehensive Maintenance Services Contractors. He managed SKM’s work with Defence Infrastructure Division and the broader Corporate.

Prior to joining SKM in 2005 Dechlan led a distinguished 20 year career in the Australian Army as an officer in the Royal Australian Engineers, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He held a wide range of appointments in the Army, including command of the 21st Construction Squadron, operational service with the United Nations in southern Lebanon.
