About Dee Browne

I am a social worker with a passion for health promotion and community development through the arts and physical activity. I am a visual artist, singer and drummer and have a commitment to engaging underserved communities creatively to cultivate mental, social and physical well-being. I have a strong background in community development work and community- led capacity building. Artistically my work has been published in BOSS magazine a youth driven arts-based magazine in Jane and Finch. I have used the arts to connect with, educate and build youth capacity with Nomanzland, Young People's Theatre, Arts For Children and Youth, For Youth Initiative, The Malvern Family Resource Centre, The YMCA, The City of Toronto, The Massey Centre, and the TDSB and TCDSB amongst other local community-based organizations. I was nominated by the Toronto Community Foundation in 2007 as a Vital Person using art to heal communities. I received the Buddhist Compassion Award in 2009 & 2010 at Ryerson University for extensive commitment to vulnerable communities. I am a two time recipient of the Laidlaw grant for "Sistah's on the Move" and "BeLovEd." In 2011 I received a scholarship for excellence in leadership from the Herbert Carnegie Foundation and for my commitment and community leadership in marginalized neighbourhoods in Toronto.
