I am studying at UC Berkeley and double majoring in Economics and Legal Studies with a 3.5 GPA. My fascination with Law & Economics, as the application of economic principles to the study of law, has fostered my technical knowledge of Section 501c3 of the Internal Revenue Code. However, that technical knowledge only supports my desire for a career in nonprofit work. As a Hispanic woman pursuing a higher education, I know what it feels like to struggle against a system that wasn’t created for me. I am very fortunate, but I know what it’s like to not have. I feel that: if you know what it’s like not to have, you never want anyone to feel that way. I’ve spent the past year learning, through text and experience, about the Nonprofit sector of business. The Haas School of Business' class on Nonprofit Organizations created my foundational understanding of the operation and challenges of tax-exempt organizations. Other legal classes have allowed me to expand on my legal understanding of tax exemption and the sociological and economic hardships that accompany them. This basic textual understanding helped prepare me to take on startup nonprofit work. I was able to take on the role of Director of Development for Scholarlink 360, a mentorship program for underprivileged youth with aspirations for Top 25 Universities. I was also able to create media for The Lost Student Project, a fund for former foster youth and formerly incarcerated individuals pursuing higher education. Those experiences opened my eyes to how difficult it is to maintain relationships, interest, and funding for Nonprofits. Currently, I volunteer at Women’s Daytime Drop-In Center, where I’ve served my community at our drop-in window to actively improve the lives of those who need our support services. I plan on attending law school and leveraging my education to expand upon the nonprofit sector. I want to support the infrastructure of nonprofits through my expertise and provide legal aid to those who can’t afford it. I do not plan to change the world or gain notoriety, I plan on changing people’s lives for the better.
