Now retired. Of the 4 specific pillars that define my career, 2 relate to my approach to delivering my job goals; and the other 2 on the achievements, itself. A refusal to accept the norm is a must for any tech marketer. Challenging, delighting the consumer/ customer makes achievements rewarding. People (Teams). Great marketing teams with shared mission achieves more. Creative endeavour alone cannot deliver. At Sony Ericsson, my global team implemented in a 48 hour time window, a change over of every “old” piece of branding material in 65 countries. Project managed by 1 supported by the other 324 of us! The following examples are from the post 2001 period. My 2 significant recent roles in marketing have been at Sony Ericsson and EE. At Sony Ericsson (JV) I was appointed to lead marketing, globally. Major achievements include creating a team of 345 exceptional individuals who would enable SE to move from 7th in BPC to 2nd in 2007; to have the highest ROCE in 07 after posting eye watering losses in 03; to be the brand innovators (FT 06). We delivered the turnaround T610 model (saved the biz); the mobile Walkman and phone/ earbud and watch combo. I negotiated via the Sony Music business a workable DRM solution, as the age of streaming approached. My product evangelists ensured that SE phones remained James Bond’s favourite between 02-08! Sony Ericsson Marketing and PR campaigned tirelessly for women in sport to be treated equally. With the support of Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Maria Sharapova, Venus and Serena Williams, we achieved that goal in tennis and increase in positives for a global brand. At EE, McKinsey identified my contribution to the business as “having democratised mobile phone ownership”. By launching UK’s first prepay. Added 6m new customers in yr 1 of product. Changed the nature of the industry. Led to a highly successful trade sale to T Mobil and subsequently EE. Academia. Resumed academic endeavours post Visa APAC. Was offered and accepted a place to study for a Master in International Relations and achieved Merit grade at University of Warwick (top 8 Political Science). Offered the very rare opportunity to research into International Security failures, as to “why” 9/11, at Warwick (top 4 International Security). Fieldwork, incl interviews in DC , Arkansas Maryland (FBI), Langley (Vir) and Texas. Following a successful viva voce, did university teaching at Warwick and B’ham, till Covid shutdowns and my own health issues intervened. I am now returning to writing.
