An authorized translator/interpreter for almost 30 years until the authorization system was discontinued in Denmark (see below), I remain a professional working between Danish and English in the field of language for specialized purposes. I worked in Denmark as an independent contractor for more than 30 years before repatriating to the US in 2018. As Denmark was too small market to allow specialization, I have interpreting and document translation experience in an exceedingly wide variety of fields ranging from pharma and engineering to labor and law. I only translate into English, but interpret in both directions. I have experience in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting in the following and many other contexts: conferences (of many different types and on a very broad range of subjects), European works council meetings, hospital accreditations, parliamentary hearings, hospital accreditations, court cases (also patent cases), arbitrations, press conferences, and depositions. I am a founding member of and former deputy chair (vice president) of Denmark-based Danish Professional Translators and Interpreters, a professional association that existed for 32 years but was recently shut down. I continue to be a member of professional associations ATA, AIIC, MATI and CHICATA. To keep up on the latest developments in my field, I also attend courses, events and conferences held by these and other relevant organizations such as NAJIT and EULITA. Note about "certification" in Denmark today: what remains after the authorization credential was discontinued in 2016 is (1) ordinary signature notarization by Danish notaries public, which anyone can purchase, and (2) certification by the Danish Chamber of Commerce, which any Danish translation business can acquire. The latter claims that the translator it signs for is "certified," but this claim has no background in law or actual certification, ISO or otherwise, so is hardly a guarantee of either education or experience. The former authorization system required acquisition of a specific 5- or 6-year university education in LSP translation and interpreting leading to the "cand.ling.merc." or "cand.interpret" master's degree, or documentation through examinations of an equivalent high level of linguistic and cultural knowledge. I earned the cand.interpret. degree in 1987 and received my authorization from the Danish Ministry of Business and Industry that same year.
