The goal of the program is to provide graduate students in the humanities with a distinctive educational experience that allows them to connect their disciplines with communities and to develop effective, cutting-edge, civically informed, ethically grounded, community-engaged scholarship. Good community-engaged work is radically collaborative, and so the program is not just a series of lectures and seminars, but a cohort experience in which community leaders, graduate students, and faculty work together. Mellon Fellows serve for two years and stay with the same cohort of community leaders, graduate students, and faculty from their first meetings to the graduate students’ final portfolio presentations.
