The goal of the program is to provide graduate students in the humanities with a distinctive educational experience that allows them to connect their disciplines with communities and to develop effective, cutting-edge, civically informed, ethically grounded, community-engaged scholarship. Good community-engaged work is radically collaborative, and so the program is not just a series of lectures and seminars, but a cohort experience in which community leaders, graduate students, and faculty work together. Mellon Fellows serve for two years and stay with the same cohort of community leaders, graduate students, and faculty from their first meetings to the graduate students’ final portfolio presentations. Built youth programs for Just Communities of Northwest Arkansas from no programming in 2003 to flourishing programs through 2007 that include (1) developing a comprehensive delivery model for an art-based diversity education program, From Barriers to Bridges, (2) co-directing Camp Anytown Arkansas, and (3) securing district-wide contracts with Northwest AR area high schools to provide diversity trainings for both students and teachers.

The mission of Women and Children First is to empower women and their children to live independently, free from domestic violence by providing crisis intervention, safe shelter, social and legal advocacy and support services.
