I founded this company to help you stand out so you attract MORE OPPORTUNITIES 💰❤️🏆 in your life and business. Keynotes and corporate training courses are a three-part formula of stand-up comedy, creative content, and activities that help build stronger connections with others.• Created an engaging corporate training class and delivered an entertaining keynote, How to be More Interesting Than a Cell Phone® to tens of thousands. Wrote a book with the same title that will be published in 1Q2025. It teaches how to be more interesting (in a good way), so you will attract more people and opportunities - personally & professionally. • Invented The Very Interesting Game®. A card game designed to help people rapidly build rapport, boost creativity, and strengthen bonds. The game is played virtually or in person with audiences of any size - even thousands of participants can play simultaneously. Live game shows include custom-designed questions for event sponsors, which they love! The original purple edition is for sale on Amazon. • "Pivoted" when COVID-19 arrived by converting the physical card game into The Very Interesting Game Show® to engage and entertain remote teams and virtual conferences worldwide. Hosted over 200 virtual game sessions until the world opened again in early 2022. (Note: We are still booking virtual games and in-person keynotes!)• Hosted, Edited, and Produced the Shut Up and Say Something!®️ podcast. It is a show about how you can live a fascinating life even when you are not obscenely rich, famous, or beautiful. No Politics. No Religion. No Ad Nauseam Topic du Jour! • Invented the Story Spikes Wheel™ – an exercise device for the brain to boost creativity. The wheel facilitates brainstorming, storytelling, and lyrics. It also generates interesting keywords to use with AI writing assistants (like ChatGPT) to create fascinating stories and songs. • In Development: An online training course to complement the book plus two mobile apps.
  • The Big Fat Tip, Inc. 501(C)(3)
    Founder & President (Volunteer Service)
The Big Fat Tip, Inc. 501(C)(3) Dec 2018 - Present
The Big Fat Tip® is my passion project. When I was in my early 20's, I waited tables at Applebees and bartended at a fancy French restaurant, Chez Pierre, in Tallahassee, Florida. I promised myself that "one day, when I made it, I would go around handing out big fat tips." I got tired of waiting for that kind of wild success, so I went ahead without it by creating this nonprofit. The mission is to deliver hope & create positive, memorable moments for people working in the U.S. service industry. Our delivery vehicle is a surprise $1,000 tip. These are Random Acts of Kindness! I involve teams of pre-qualified volunteers who donated money or have actively promoted us on social media and within their networks. (They are often more excited about giving the tips than those who receive them!) Watch our latest videos on Facebook (bigfattip), YouTube, and our website: bigfattip.org. As of November 2024, we have given out $72,000 (72 $1,000 tips) using donations from people like you!Special Note: We DO NOT TAKE REQUESTS FOR MONEY to be given to a specific person. The minute we do that, the project is over. No exceptions. Why? Because we would have to establish criteria, hire judges, spend time on meetings and discussions, and more time informing those who didn't get the money why. We firmly believe everyone needs a little bit of money and a whole lot of positivity. Billions of people need money, and we are just one small nonprofit trying to push some positive energy out in the world. We may grow into something bigger, but our impact is small right now. All board members are volunteers. We have a lean operating budget and do not pay salaries. I paid for all of the startup "administrative costs," like the legal fees, IRS filing fees, website, and design costs. When you donate money, it goes straight to these tips. We've grown through word of mouth and a few TV and radio mentions. Please share with your network!
  • Augeo
    Senior Vice President Business Development
    Augeo Apr 2018 - Dec 2018
    St. Paul, Mn, Us
Augeo (pronounced "Ah Gee Oh") helps organizations attract and retain customers, members, and employees. They do this in various ways, from specialized rewards and recognition programs to insurance benefits and social networking products. Augeo also has a lucrative "credit card linking" service that allows customers to amplify the benefits and rewards of their favorite credit card. After nearly two decades working for GEICO & studying and discussing the competition in weekly reports, it was enthralling to meet directly with "enemy" insurance carriers like USAA, Progressive, Nationwide, Liberty Mutual, MetLife, AIG, Kin, California Casualty, and Healthy Paws. It's easy to get sucked into the idea that you work for the best company or team. Working for the second-largest auto insurer (at the time) was a huge source of pride for me and thousands of GEICO associates. It was surprising and humbling to see how our competition went above and beyond to provide the best service to their customers and ensure their associates knew they were a top priority. I walked into their beautiful headquarters and witnessed firsthand how well they treat their customers and associates. I saw how they operate, what they value, and many of their newest innovations. I wasn't at Augeo long, and that is OK; I wanted to develop innovative services and products instead of selling life insurance affinity programs. I learned a great deal about voluntary benefits and pricing, rewards, and recognition programs while I was there. I continued to strengthen my knowledge, relationships, and overall exposure in the telematics space. Volunteer Work: The American Society of Association Executives: Chair of the Industry Partner Alliance; regular thought leader and presenter at ASAE conferences. Imperial Symphony Orchestra (ISO): Board Vice President; Co-Chair of the ISO annual Opera; Producer and Founder of the "Biscuits, Bloodys and the Blues" fundraiser.
  • Geico
Senior Marketing Director: Sales, Marketing And Corporate Partnerships & Engagement
    Geico Mar 2016 - Mar 2018
    Chevy Chase, Md, Us
Affinity Marketing, Partnerships, Collaborations, Innovation & Business Development. Relationship-building was the central focus. I managed a $50+ million marketing budget and led the "preferred business" targeting strategies. We marketed GEICO insurance to 122+ million members from 800+ organizations. This portfolio experienced double-digit annual growth and generated over $6 Billion a year in written auto premiums by the time I left the company. I did this with the help of some super smart & savvy GEICO marketers whom I miss something fierce.• Head of Division: Restructured it and established all standard operating procedures from the ground up to target the most profitable customers. • Trainer & Coach: Hired, trained, and supervised a hybrid team of program managers. Roughly half of my division worked remotely (in other states/time zones), and the other half worked out of a local office. I reported remotely to my boss. • Relationship Builder: Developed strong rapport with the senior-level staff at hundreds of corporate partners, nonprofits, associations, military, federal organizations, college sports, data companies, telematics-based businesses, and affiliated vendors. Negotiated the terms of contracts worth millions of dollars annually.• Road Warrior and Seasoned Public Speaker: Designed and delivered humorous presentations to engage audiences from intimate cocktail receptions to auditoriums with 5,000+ people. Traveled extensively – attending and speaking at hundreds of networking events and conferences across the U.S. and Canada for eleven years. • Experienced Marketer: Designed & directed the marketing and business strategy to capture the most profitable customers at the lowest acquisition costs. • Telematics Project: Represented GEICO at industry conferences and cultivated relationships with companies in this space. Note: GEICO senior leadership refused to embrace this tech, one of the driving forces behind my departure in 2018.
  • Geico
Marketing Director: Sales, Marketing, Corporate Partnerships & Engagement (Nonprofits & Federal )
    Geico Apr 2007 - Feb 2016
    Chevy Chase, Md, Us
Affinity Marketing, Partnerships, Collaborations, Innovation & Business Development. • Trainer & Coach: Hired, trained, and managed a remote staff who excelled in marketing, sales, and executing hundreds of sponsored events and trade shows around the U.S. and Canada a year. • Marketer & Business Strategist: Restructured the division from the ground up. Directed the marketing strategy for 700+ corporate clients. These strategies varied greatly and incorporated events, experiential, mail, email, social media, billboards, college sports, and radio. This portfolio brought in nearly $4 billion in written premiums annually from "preferred business" - our most profitable customers. These customers had higher retention rates, lower claims expenses, higher policy premiums, and purchased more products from us compared to the rest of the Company. • Nine-year track record of meeting or exceeding planned goals and increasing sales year over year. Territory: All U.S. States.• Created and implemented an "out-of-the-box" strategy to save GEICO millions in annual acquisition costs.• Grew portfolio of auto policies in force faster than the rest of the Company in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. GEICO was the fastest-growing private passenger auto insurer in the U.S. for the previous ten years. So, we like to say we broke the sound barrier during that time. • Worked with the Federal market from June 2010 to May 2013. Directed the creative strategy for radio, bus/metro, social media, and various print and online publications. Promoted the "Funniest Fed" comedy show, the annual "Public Service Awards" ceremony, and "Appreciation Nights" at major-league sporting events. Finished this departmental rotation at 104% of our inquiry and 123% of our aggressive sales business plan.Telematics Project: I represented GEICO at industry conferences and was tasked with developing relationships with telematics vendors and car manufacturers - while our executives mulled over the data.
  • Geico
    Planning Manager
    Geico Jan 2005 - Apr 2007
    Chevy Chase, Md, Us
I was responsible for pulling together all sections of the Florida business plan: Human Resources, Sales, Service, Underwriting, and all levels of Claims. • Managed the production and editing of the annual plan document, roughly one inch thick. • Reported and analyzed a multi-billion dollar budget.• Tracked the execution of hundreds of action items monthly.• Managed SAS programming, web design, daily newsletters, reports, and special projects. • Taught a seven-hour "Understanding GEICO's Growth" class twice monthly to associates. • Managed the Command Center and reported on call center service levels for Sales, Service, and Claims at any day and night. • Served as the advisor to committees designed to improve regional morale and communication and created whimsical items and events to keep 2000 associates engaged. (Formal Committees: Diversity, Celebration & Recognition, Fun, etc.) Created ad-hoc groups based on interests, like cooking. Hired chefs to teach associates how to roll sushi, make pizza on an outdoor grill, and make the perfect chicken breast. Created an associate baseball card game to help employees get to know one another. Associates collected and traded the cards, earning additional points when they obtained autographs.• Completed a "mini-rotation" through claims. This rotation intended to broaden my knowledge of the claims process before attending a management seminar. During a ride-along with some adjusters, I observed their gas purchasing behaviors and made one small suggestion, which resulted in $50,000 in annual savings for the region. (Those savings are exponentially higher due to gas prices now.)Served on the historic Polk Theatre board and assisted with various fundraisers for the local Chamber of Commerce and charities.
  • Geico
    Sales And Service Training Manager
    Geico Jan 2004 - Jan 2005
    Chevy Chase, Md, Us
I stepped into this newly created position at GEICO and rapidly built a successful structure:• Managed multiple training classes with 100–120 new hires at any given time during a period of exponential policy growth at GEICO. These new hires produced the top sales in the nation. Headquarters sent analysts down to observe our classes - trying to figure out the secret ingredient in our special sauce. I attributed most of our success to my team of enthusiastic and bright trainers, who were an absolute delight to work with every day. • Participated in the first round of "Lean Six Sigma," which was introduced to the Company. • Created a Coaching and Training program for our aspiring supervisors, who spent most of their time working with our new hires. Mentoring them was an enriching experience, and I am thrilled to track their success today.• United Way Coordinator: Increased associate donations by 30% over the previous year by launching "Got 4 Dollars?" and (whisper) marketing campaigns. Proof that asking for less money can sometimes yield more.
  • Geico
    Customer Service Call Center Manager
    Geico Oct 2002 - Jan 2004
    Chevy Chase, Md, Us
Directly managed seventeen supervisors and 170 associates in a fast-paced, ever-changing call center environment during a period of rocket fuel-injected growth for GEICO. Held the top record for hiring associates with the lowest turnover rates. And I became an expert at handling every HR issue under the sun.
  • Geico
Customer Service Call Center Supervisor & Trainer
    Geico Nov 2001 - Oct 2002
    Chevy Chase, Md, Us
After being rated as one of the top supervisors in the department, I rotated into the role of Service Trainer. I was asked to take on this critical function on a Friday afternoon, with a new class starting that Monday. I reviewed the training manual and discovered it was somewhat outdated. So I wrote a new chapter each evening after work and created tests, quizzes, and class activities. I loved teaching!
  • Geico
    Customer Service Coach/Assistant Supervisor
    Geico Feb 2001 - Nov 2001
    Chevy Chase, Md, Us
I volunteered for assorted projects - any that I could get my hands on and many that I created on my own. My favorite project was working on a new version of our "A Call," which aimed to increase our rapport over the phone in the most efficient manner possible. I went to college at night and often returned to the office to continue working on these projects because remote work was not allowed then. The night guard would seek me out before turning off the lights in the building.
  • Geico
    Customer Service Agent
    Geico Jul 2000 - Feb 2001
    Chevy Chase, Md, Us
Call center jobs are demanding. The work is repetitive, the evaluation metrics are out of reach, and the customers often treat you like dirt. Every minute of your workday is measured – even bathroom breaks are rigidly monitored. As an employee, you feel like merely a number on someone else's spreadsheet. Naturally, I was dissatisfied with the position. So, one day I walked into the manager's office and bluntly asked what it would take to move up the ladder. A little taken aback, she told me to "Get back in school" and "Ensure people know who you are." I joined a committee to improve Customer Service processes that afternoon. I set an appointment with Florida Southern College Admissions the next day, and I enrolled in the following semester. I applied for an assistant supervisor role (Coach) a few months after that critical conversation. The competition was fierce. The hiring managers sent out a pre-interview assignment asking for "Five ways to boost morale." I submitted 30 ideas and got the job.
  • Geico
    Insurance Sales Counselor
    Geico Feb 1999 - Jul 2000
    Chevy Chase, Md, Us
When I was a new hire in Training, I was rewarded for my outstanding sales closure results, which were virtually unheard of at the time, even for seasoned associates. (Floor average was roughly half of that amount.) I quickly became known in the call center for my unique rapport-building skills with customers. My calls were used as the "model" example for new hires and GEICO managers.
