About Deema Hussein

I am interested in improving translational research for patients with Central Nervous System (CNS) tumours. Currently, I am working on patients’ material to investigate mechanisms of drug-induced cellular response and drug resistance, and to identify effective diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic biomarkers for CNS tumours. My research training path started at the University of Wales (UK) where I completed a BSc. in Genetics and Biochemistry. I pursued a PhD. in cancer studies at the University of Manchester (UK) with Professor Stephen Taylor, where I studied the kinetochore checkpoints and the impact of a Farnesyl transferase inhibitor on cell division. My first post-doctoral training was at the Manchester Institute for Cancer Research (UK) with Prof Caroline Dive and Dr. Guy Makin where I investigated the relationship between hypoxia and apoptosis in neuroblastoma following treatment with therapeutic drugs. I continued on training by evaluating pre-clinically a novel therapeutic reagent, in a range of paediatric CNS tumours. Next, I joined the University of Nottingham (UK) as a senior research fellow with Prof Richard Grundy and Dr. Beth Coyle, where I examined the role cancer stem cells have in drug resistance in paediatric CNS tumours. In 2009, I joined the University of Hail (KSA) to establish the foundation of the Medical College working as the Academic Supervisor of the college. Then I worked for 12 years at King Fahd Medical Research Center, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah (KSA), working within the Neurooncology Translational Group.

Working in collaboration with scientists, neurosurgeons and pathologists, I established a Central Nervous System tumours (CNST) bank for tissues and more than 80 newly derived primary cell lines. I achieved six supporting grants and supervised twenty undergraduate students from the Applied Medical Sciences Collage on projects studying Meningioma. I co-supervised one Master and two PhD. students on studying drug resistance mechanisms in CNSTs, as well as trained 16 technical staff in cell culture and immunofluorescence related methods. Currently, I teach Genetics to forth year undergraduate and master students for the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences. In addition, I edit funding proposals for the centre, and have set up several cancer and CNST related workshops.

The responsibilities I took on during this employment were: Supervisor of Academic Affairs: I worked in a team to establish bilingual documents for the fundamental regulations and procedures of the medical college, including: organisational charts, job descriptions, and operating procedures for administration, academic and educational units. I completed academic related bilingual documents such as the medical college exam regulations and a college prospectus. In addition, I regularly reported to and assisted the Vice Deans in all academic affairs and prepared summary reports for the activities as well as achievements of the divisions of academic affairs including academic performance of faculty members and students overall academic performance. Coordinator of Medical Genetics: Since the collage was new, I was the first to coordinate the subject of Medical Genetics. I developed the Medical Genetics study guide, introduced clinical cases assessments and designed practical classes, and set up time tables, delegated teaching staff and checked the quality of lectures. Teaching: I taught first year medical students Introduction to Medical Genetics, second year students Biochemistry (The biochemistry of genes), third year students Medical Genetics and fourth year students lectures for Ethics of Medical Genetics and Genetic Applications in Forensic Medicine.Research: With limited resources and no collage facilities, I set up two undergraduate students epidemiological studies, the first related to renal failure and the second related to breast cancer.
  • University Of Nottingham
    Senior Research Fellow
University Of Nottingham Jan 2007 - Aug 2009
    Nottingham, United Kingdom
The role of Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) in paediatric brain tumours I investigated the presence of cancer stem cells in several primary paediatric cell lines and their contribution to drug resistance. I initiated cell lines from primary tumours, applied stem cell culture techniques, used methods for cell differentiation, and applied analytical techniques such as DNA Comet assay, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence and Bioinformatics. I successfully supervised MSc. students and supported a PhD student.

    Research Fellow.
Cancer Research Uk Manchester Institute Oct 2003 - Dec 2006
    Manchester, United Kingdom
I worked on two projects:-The effect of hypoxia on the drug response of neuroblastoma cell lines to clinically relevant therapeutic reagents.I evaluated the effect of hypoxia on the response of neuroblastoma cell lines to clinically relevant drugs, with a particular focus on the role of HIF1-α and apoptotic pathways. The main methods I used included molecular cloning, clonogenic assay, flow cytometry, subcellular fractionation, western blot and culturing cells in a hypoxia chamber.-Pre-clinical evaluation of RH1 in paediatric tumours I tested the effectiveness of the newly established chemotherapeutic reagent RH1 in vitro for eight paediatric cell lines, and in vivo for two cell lines. The techniques I used included SRB, synergistic comparisons and animal-xenograft implantation and drug treatment.
