About Deena Class, Ph.D

I’m Deena Class, founder of Word & Plant, where I help public gardens, parks, and green spaces build deeper connections with the communities they serve. I specialize in Community- and IDEA-Centered (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) Interpretive Communications, working to create public spaces that are welcoming, inclusive, and engaging for all.In addition to my consulting work with organizations, I collaborate with individuals and families to design personalized garden spaces that reflect their unique needs—whether it’s creating medicinal herb gardens, food forests, or therapeutic gardens focused on well-being. My approach focuses on sustainability, low-maintenance design, and reconnecting people with nature in meaningful ways.I’m also deeply committed to giving back, volunteering my time and expertise to lead community gardening initiatives, including local school gardening programs and public beautification projects. I believe in the power of gardens to transform not just spaces, but communities as a whole. With over two decades of experience in research, strategy, and community engagement, I focus on fostering collaboration between organizations and the diverse communities they serve. My work blends cross-cultural lived experience with a passion for reconnecting people with nature, health, and well-being. I’m committed to capacity building and empowering communities to be active partners in shaping the spaces they inhabit.I’m currently working on a book exploring how public green spaces can use Community- and IDEA-Centered Interpretive Communications to better engage diverse audiences, a project supported by the Sowing Excellence Award from the United States Botanic Garden and the IDEA Center for Public Gardens, an initiative of the Denver Botanic Gardens and the American Public Gardens Association with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. As a leader and facilitator, I strive to help create intellectually nourishing environments where people can thrive. I believe in listening deeply, co-creating strategies, and guiding people in asking the right questions. I'm often known to say "I don't have any answers for you, but I'll help guide you to the right questions."
