Graduate Research AssistantUniversity Of Minnesota-Twin Cities Sep 2014 - Dec 2018Minneapolis And St. Paul, Minnesota, Us– Pursuing a novel interdisciplinary effort that combines knowledge of computational materials science, continuum mechanics and electronic structure to enable strain engineering modeling of 2D materials to examine their potential for flexible electronics and strain engineering applications.– Systematically developed novel helical objective structures of various 2D materials in MATLAB.– Used shell scripting to methodically submit multiple jobs on HPC servers followed by data collection and organization. Developed MATLAB codes to automatically process and analyze data and plot figures.– Executed careful literature survey to acquaint myself with current 2D materials research and proposed an innovative approach for finding equivalent thickness of 2D materials via objective molecular dynamics.– Created orthotropic plate model with a directional-dependent thickness for anisotropic 2D layered materials (e.g. phosphorene) using objective boundary conditions and a density functional based potential.– Using Ewald summation technique to theoretically determine electrostatic forces on each atom of helical objective structure. Addition of this part when coded in FORTRAN will significantly reduce the computational load in advanced DFTB+ code.– Worked in collaboration with electron microscopy group to understand interfacial properties of layered SiO2 structures via experiments and atomistic DFTB simulations. This work is currently under preparation.– Performing DFTB+ simulations to study the unique piezoelectric properties of single layer MoS2 to aid the design of novel ultrasensitive strain sensors. -
Visiting Research ScientistUniversity Of Bremen Sep 2017 - Nov 2017Bremen, Bremen, DePerformed self consistent charge calculations using objective molecular dynamics simulations on ZnO nanostructures to study its semiconducting and piezoelectric properties, and developed a thickness model for varying number of ZnO layers. -
Undergraduate Research AssistantIndian Institute Of Technology, Kanpur Dec 2012 - May 2014Kanpur, Up, InVibration mode localization in graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) December 2012 - May 2014with Prof. Shakti S Gupta, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, IndiaProf. Romesh C. Batra, Virginia Tech, USA– Discovered extensive change in vibration of GNRs upon addition of few atoms, which is usually neglected in mechanics of sensitive mass sensors.– Observed a new phenomenon called cooperative mode localization in multi-layered GNRs and defined a new parameter to quantify this mode localization.– Coded a C++ program to generate H passivated atomic co-ordinates of GNRs cut along various angles and examined ripples of various spatial wavelengths upon energy minimization via MM3 potential in TINKER code.Electronic properties of graphene deposited on metallic substrate July - November 2013with Prof. Somnath Bhowmick, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India– Detected metallic to semiconductor transition due to varying orbital distances between graphene layer on Ni substrate along different crystallographic orientations via ab initio DFT software package Quantum Espresso. -
