Synthesis, characterization, and mechanistic studies of water oxidation by metal-bipyridine complexes with hydrogen bonding capabilities to bound water substrate. Research focus is in the exploration into Cu and Co and other first row, low cost transition metals and from homogeneous to heterogeneous catalysts. Development of new metal complexes utilizing unique pyridinol-N-heterocyclic-carbene bidentate and pincer ligands for catalytic (de)hydrogenation and electro-/photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with first row transition and precious metals.General lab manager for the Papish group including mentoring and assisting 5 undergraduates and 3 incoming graduate students (currently).

Ph.D. Research – Synthesis and characterization of simple and complex ligands, iron-sulfur clusters, and metalloporphyrins for the preparation of model complexes of sulfite reductase. The model design incorporates a [4Fe-4S] cluster which acts as an electron reservoir when linked to a metalloporphyrin which acts as the catalytic site. These model complexes have been generated and modified for optimal connectivity in solution for the purpose of reductive catalysis. Full characterization of complexes was obtained with 1H- and 19F-NMR, IR, Far-IR, UV/vis and LCT mass spectroscopy and with learned techniques such as magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), resonance Raman (rR), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, electrochemical techniques such as cyclovoltammetry (CV) and bulk electrolysis, and DFT computational analysis.Under the supervision of joint PIs: Nicolai Lehnert and Dimitri Coucouvanis

In collaboration with Chevron Phillips. Organometallic complexes were synthesized and characterized for the catalytic transformation of ethylene to α-olefins. Iron, cobalt, and manganese halide was bound by varying tridentate ligands to tune the chain length of α-olefins generated in test facilities at Chevron-Phillips. Primary characterization performed used 1H- and 13C-NMR, IR, and UV/vis spectroscopy and effective magnetic moment measured by an Evans balance.PI: Michael Carney
