About Deirdre Brown, M.S.

As a school counselor, my focus is to act as an ally for students, parents, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders. School counselors wear many hats and we must always be up for partnering in new challenges with our communities. As a first-generation college graduate, I understand some of the challenges many students face when beginning the process of planning for their future. Having the support and encouragement of allies who believed in me, I was able to navigate these challenges and, now, I feel inspired to help others achieve success through academic, college/career, and personal/emotional support. I believe that all students have the right to quality education and possess the capability to become successful in their future endeavors.My professional background includes over 13 years of counseling experience. I have supported clients with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI). I have also worked with clients on educational and career planning that increased employment prospects. I have also worked as a student advisor/career counselor for 1st generation college students from disadvantaged areas. My education includes a Master's degree in school counseling as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Psychology and Geography. My studies helped me to understand individuals and communities, especially those afflicted with mental health disabilities, within a well-rounded understanding of cultural diversity. It has also increased my knowledge and skills in student advocacy, transition planning, counseling, and educational leadership. My goal is to inspire positive change in my students and help make a real difference in their lives. Skills and abilities: Active listening, individual counseling, group counseling, career counseling, case management, motivational interviewing techniques, service or treatment planning, facilitating workshops, public speaking, supervising/training, data tracking and PC literacy.Therapeutic treatment modalities include Solution-Focused Brief Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
