I was called to the Bar in 1974 having graduated from University College, London in 1972 and spent a year working in London Teaching Hospitals obtaining experience in hospital administration and gaining insight into clinical practice and employment law.I have more than 40 years'​ experience, covering a range of criminal and civil work, including commercial litigation and aviation insurance. I have an extensive professional practice specialising in clinical negligence and personal injury law and have been involved in important developments in these areas. I have a particular interest in obstetric and brain injury arising from perinatal asphyxia. I also specialise in catastrophic personal injury including traumatic brain damage, spinal injuries and Fatal Accident Act claims.I have been involved in leading developments in these areas including cases where gross damages range from £2 million to more than £25 million. In 1987 I acted for the first personal injury plaintiff to recover £1 million damages and I was leading junior in the landmark ruling by the House of Lords in Bolitho v City & Hackney HA (1997) the definitive case on the interpretation of a ‘responsible body of medical opinion’ within the Bolam test, and its application to acts of omission and causation. I have been included in the Chambers & Partners Directory as a ‘Leader in the Field’ of Clinical Negligence for the more than 10 years.
