DISSERTATION TITLE: CONCRETE ROSES: A CRITICAL EXPLORATION OF BLACK ADOLESCENT GIRLS' LITERACY AND LANGUAGE PRACTICES IN AN OUT-OF-SCHOOL ONLINE STREET LITERATURE BOOK CLUBServed on several community-based projects as a qualitative methodologist including the following: Conducted a school district-side pilot study on high school students' literacy practices in digital spacesCompiled literature reviews for several projects Conducted action-based research on the motivational factors that influence black girls' interest in street literature texts Created a series of social justice lessons plans incorporated in a middle school curriculum Conducted semi structured interviews with middle school students on how they use literacy, specifically writing to address social justice issues in their community.I have also developed and taught several graduate level courses both in the School of Information Studies, as well as in the School of Education using various modalities.

Served as the project manager, literacy consultant, and grant writer for The Cheddar Bowl 3D Financial Literacy Gamification Project geared towards students between the ages of 16-22. As the project manager, I managed a team of 5 including two computer programmers, two writers, and one computer gamer. As the literacy consultant, I conducted weekly team meetings and established team goals and literacy goals, and assessed the progress of the project over the course of the project. Additionally, I helped to establish synergy between both the programming components and the writing components within the gaming structure.In preparation to market the gamification project to the target audience (ages 16-22), I aligned several aspects of the gaming structure with the 21st Century Learning Standards. As the grant writer, I wrote a total of 8 grants to fund the next phase of beta testing.

My role as a school library media specialist entailed the following areas: (1) Management & Administration (2) Teaching/Collaboration (3) Training. I managed a school library media center that served 600 6-8th graders and 40 classroom teachers and support staff.Through grant writing, I procured 800K in capital improvement funds to revitalize the school library media center. As a manager, I developed both in house and outreach programming (books clubs, book fairs, & author visits) to promote literacy.I was instrumental in assisting students in learning 21st Century information literacy skills.I collaborated with classroom teachers and developed English Language Arts Curriculum Maps, in order to develop instructional resources that enhanced student learning. I also conducted workshops with teachers and staff on incorporating literacy and technology across the curriculum.I co-chaired the region's library advisory committee that developed and planned professional development for school library media specialists. I also provided training to staff on the use of the Destiny Library Cataloguing System. I mentored pre-service library graduate students in fulfillment of their internship requirements.

My role as a senior young adult librarian entailed the following: (1) Management & Administration (2) Teaching (3) Public Service. I assisted the Branch Librarian and the Assistant Branch Librarian manage the day to day administrative operations of the branch. I managed an annual young adult budget of 20K and I selected, purchased, and processed young adult materials for the young adult collection. I also maintained the upkeep of the Community Information Service Collection. I also taught beginner's Internet workshops for the general public. I also provided reader advisory services to both adults and young adults at the Information Desk. I conducted a variety of in-house and outreach programs, including read aloud programs, summer reading programs, and book clubs.
