Daniel Mann is a PhD student in Sociocultural Studies in Kinesiology and Sociology of Sport at the University of Western Ontario, where his research looks at how masculinity is constructed, governed and maintained in amateur rugby contexts, using ethnographic methods. Dan’s research looks at the intersection of colonialism and rugby, and how this continues to influence the game today.Dan is also an Adjunct Lecturer in Sociology and Urban Studies at LaGuardia Community College, City University of New York, where he has taught across sociology as well as in the urban studies programme since 2019. His research interests focus on gentrification, ethnic neighbourhoods and mass transit, with a particular focus on New York City. He is the producer and director of Astoria Stories, a short documentary about social change in Astoria, Queens, shot during the height of the COVID pandemic in the spring of 2020, thanks to a grant from the Open Educational Resources initiative of CUNY.Dan holds a BA in Government and International Relations from Suffolk University, an MSc in Social Change from The University of Manchester, is a New Yorker, lives in Toronto and is fortunate enough to have played rugby—strictly amateurly—in the UK, the US, Australia, and Canada. He is, has been, and always will be, a prop, and still harbours dreams of scoring a try one day before he retires from playing.
