The caller ID read Higher Education and I answered.I attended college because it seemed like what I was supposed to do. I had aunts, uncles, and cousins go, but not my parents. My mother encouraged me to attend but said that it was ultimately my choice. I did. I went with the intention of getting a degree in audio production so that I could be a studio engineer. Turns out that there was way more science and math than I cared for and I pivoted to broadcast journalism. That major choice didn't last long. Thinking of transferring schools, I was given the opportunity to create my own major. Everything that I was interested revolved around the music industry, so my degree would be music business.Once I graduated, I didn't think I was ready for the music industry, so I went back for a masters. Again, graduate school wasn't something on my radar, but I went anyway because it kept me in school, an environment I enjoyed. I went through the first semester and it wasn't bad. I did ok. During that time, I thought I wanted to get into admissions. Someone took a chance on me (I wasn't the greatest student in high school) and I wanted to return the favor. To make a long story short, I never got an admissions job. I did however get a job in Residence Life and that's where my higher ed career began.Answering that call has afforded me opportunities I'm not sure I would have gotten. I've never imagined if I declined the offer (I was not an RA in college. I was all about orientation!) and continued working at the casino. I just think I was placed on this path because it would give me a chance to make an impact on someone's life and I believe in the years that I've been in higher ed, I've done just that.
