My duties arefocused on elk data processing, which includes elk calf ground capture and processing, radio-tagging/GPS collaring elk calves, lead crews in capture and surveying, using radio telemetry to monitor elk calves, triangulation using 3-element Yagi, Omi- and H-antennae, game camera monitoring and placement, vegetation surveying, elk mortality investigation, elk stalking/tracking, assist in adult capture and collaring, regular use of 4x4 vehicles and ATVs, data analyses using LOAS, LOTEK, ArcMap/GIS, Excel, data entry, working with complex databases, grant report writing, locating parturition sites, work long, irregular hours in remote areas. This position is unique to other technician jobs because my supervisor was on furlough during most of the summer season. I was expected to carry on the project as lead, going so far as to writing grant reports, handling administrative duties, and creating the vegetation protocol with minimal critique.
Ecosystem Support Team Member
As a member of the Ecosystem Support Team (EST), I work with approximately 17 public and private partners in the Gulf Coast Plains Ecosystem Partnership (GCPEP). As an EST member, I have a diverse set of duties required of our partnership agreements. These include (but are not limited to): prescribed burning, operating a type 6 engine, operating UTV/ATVs on burns, Red-Cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) habitat maintenance, replacing artificial RCW inserts using a chainsaw, nest peeping, translocation of RCW’s, fledging checks and noosing/banding of RCW chicks, Gopher Tortoise surveying and habitat maintenance, herbicide application on invasive species, mechanical removal of invasive species using chainsaws/brush cutters, timber cruising, vegetation monitoring, regular maintenance of equipment, and administrative work such as data entry and planning with partners on a daily basis. In addition, I am a primary contributor to all social media networks and adamantly use these formats to promote the Longleaf Alliance’s activities, projects, partner events, and mission.
