Children are actually practicing life and getting ready for school! They learn many life skills when they are allowed to play freely without much more than a little ‘guidance’ from parents and teachers. What game are we going to play? Who will lead the game and what role will the other children play? They learn social order, problem solving skills, and communication skills. They learn cooperation and how to take turns. They learn about ‘fairness’ in a world that isn’t very fair. They learn empathy (the ability to feel what another person is feeling). They learn how to make friends and how to maintain friendships. All of these are important lessons to learn and they learn them from PLAYING! Observe your child by him/herself and with other children. Pay close attention and think about what skills and lessons they are learning. You’ll be amazed! All of the skills children learn through play apply directly to real life situations and prepare them for school.
