I wanted to be a teacher because I love working with children and I wanted a profession where I would be able to make a difference in people’s lives. I am passionate about reaching the needs of children and inevitably creating a better tomorrow. Teaching gives me the opportunity to express my creativity, be constantly challenged and interact with curious minds. There is never a dull moment in the classroom! Students come into my classroom with different learning styles, ability levels, language proficiency, and background knowledge. When planning instruction I try to address different interests and abilities found within the classroom. I use a pre-test to assess where individual students need to begin study of a specific content. Based on the results of the pre-tests, I then use flexible grouping to group and regroup students. I use a variety of ongoing assessments to continuously monitor students’ progress. I use a variety of instructional strategies to reach all types of learning styles. I know that my students are learning when I hear them discussing, asking questions, and writing the content in which they have learned. I also like to use technology to differentiate my instruction. Interactive websites have games for different ability levels, and students who are completing projects or presentations can work at their own pace. I set up activities around the classroom and use task cards or centers so that students can travel from one task to the next.
