It was originally built in 1908 but Odeon closed it in 1995. It lay derelict until 2010 at which point a small team of us raised £1m in 8 weeks to buy the building and save it from demolition. Since then, we have restored the cinema from a 4 screen cinema, to one glorious art deco screen, with a capacity of around 450. In November 2010, we renamed the cinema 'The Odyssey' after the work of late local resident, Stanley Kubrick, and to represent its great journey. The Odyssey finally opened its doors to the public December 13th 2014, and tickets have been sold out ever since.
