Career: What happens when a passion and meaning warrior tours academia, healthcare and human services.It started when I needed a job to pay my phone bill in college. The listing was perfect. “Come make a difference, no experience needed, will train.” It was for a counselor in a group home for kids with disabilities. I was hired on the spot. The 9-year-old kid who didn’t talk and had the goal of putting his shoes on instead of throwing them out the window, or at me, got me hooked. Specifically, the grin on his face that lit up the room when he finally did it, which was almost a year after we first started, which was how long it took for him to trust.That led to more group homes, helping start an employment program for people deemed unemployable, a PhD in Special Education, and a job where I worked from home and flew around the country starting integrated vocational special education programs on grant money.Then my dad died, and everything stopped. Grief stripped me down to bare essence. And put in place a radical call to work in hospice. Which led to hospice volunteering, which led to meditation and a lot of soul work, and finally, a deep desire to change course.What came next was nursing school with a focus on hospice, and later, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner license. And crisis work and behavioral home health and public health and a private therapy practice teaching mindfulness in nature.These moves are not for the linear career textbooks. What was I thinking with all that school and all these jobs? I was understandably questioned by those around me at first, and even by myself. But I came to accept - and now celebrate - that my career is an evolving expression of my values. Each has been a way of more closely aligning my passions with my work and making my work matter more.
