Writer, Exploring The Stories Behind FoodSelf-Employed Mar 2012 - PresentSeattleI explore stories behind food as a way to learn about a place and the people who are dedicated to their craft. I love discovering how tastes and foods are shaped by history, immigration and the environment — and of course the personal stories of the hardworking people behind the counter, in the kitchen or in the field. The cooking and eating part of the research deepens the connection with the people and the place. My food-history writing has appeared in the Australian Financial Review, the Seattle Times and Alaska Airlines Magazine. My book, “Tables From the Rubble,” tells the stories of San Francisco restaurants that opened in the years after the 1906 earthquake, highlighting a few that remain to offer food, drinks and stories with direct links to the city’s past. “Tables From The Rubble” includes dozens of historic and contemporary photos, and is available in both multimedia and print editions. I have created several visually compelling events around "Tables From The Rubble," including the 2018 Alice Carey Ross Lecture for San Francisco Heritage, and "Taste of History" dinners at the Palace Hotel and Tallman Hotel.Links to "Tables From The Rubble" and other stories are in the “Publications” section below.
