About Denise Gudwin
I am currently a national consultant and work with various school districts in the areas of literacy, Common Core, RTI, Co-Teaching/Inclusion, and learning disabilities. Additionally, I teach at Seattle University, after many years at Florida International University and Barry University. My experience includes that of a classroom teacher, staff developer, central office administrator, and university instructor. I am the author of eight teacher seminar handbooks with the Bureau of Education and Research, and am co-author of 1) Phonological Awareness and Early Literacy Assessment (Wright Group), 2) Professional Development: Assisting Urban Schools in Making Annual Yearly Progress (Sept. 2007, Journal of Urban Learning, Teaching, & Research), 3) A Qualitative Study of New/Early Career Special Education Teacher Retention in a Multicultural Urban Setting (Spring 2008, Florida Educational Leadership), and 4) Mentoring and Coaching: A Lifeline for Teachers in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Classrooms (2010, Corwin Press)My goals include providing school districts and teachers high quality professional development and consulting services, increasing the opportunities for success with students who are struggling in literacy. I also work with specific students on a case-by-case basis in literacy. By far, the most rewarding experience of my past thirty years in the field of education has been building those "ah-ha" moments with the children who need us most. Assisting students with learning disabilities of any age, pre-school through college, has been a very gratifying experience and continues to be a focus."The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious... to have one idea spark another." Adjunct Professor
Currently teaching a graduate class at Seattle University. Previously, I taught at Florida International University with the department of Education and Psychological Studies in the College of Education and Barry University, in Miami, FL.When I left the classroom after 20 years of teaching to work at the district office (M-DCPS), I really missed teaching. I always knew that teaching was my passion, but I learned that whether the student was 6 or 26 - it was definitely a passion of mine, and that opened the door to higher education for me. I began teaching at Barry University and Florida International University to get my teaching fix. I absolutely love it. Each semester, I also have the opportunity to work with undergrad/grad students who need extra assistance, and my special education background is still being used. http://ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=784463 (FIU) and http://ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=784402 (Barry)
